TFW can't count to 4

And because they can't count to 4 you make them play Holst's Mars.

I get that reference.

How popular was this movies, i thought it was kind of obscure

A cue from the conductor overrides your counting, because if the conductor picks up the pace beyond what is on the sheet music, you need to roll with it.
#24 - xexion (06/13/2015) [-]
If the conductor picks up the pace you should also be doing so. What he's saying he'll do is make a fake cue, before the actual one should occur to get those not paying attention.
User avatar #25 - Greevon (06/13/2015) [-]
I just don't know what you're supposed to do in that situation. The conductor is what keeps things moving along, they're supposed to be an authority.

So what they're saying is "I'm not actually here for a reason, because sometimes I'll do the wrong thing on purpose and you need to ignore me."

Like a cop conducting traffic waving people the wrong way down the road and getting mad they follow the authority figure? My conductors always said to pay attention to them above the sheet music because what they do is what everyone else is going to do and if you follow the sheet above them, you'll be off. So what, some people say to follow the sheet music and counting above the conductor?
User avatar #52 - gadgetzan (06/13/2015) [-]
From my fairly limited experience with following a conductor in choir and orchestra, they are the law and dictator. If the conductor cues you in 3 beats before you should actually come in, you skip everything and jump to that spot. When the conductor is wrong, he's automatically right and you're wrong.

"When the conductor is wrong, he's automatically right and you're wrong." is the best thing i've read all week long
#26 - xexion (06/13/2015) [-]
The conductor is ultimately unnecessary to some degrees - a very competent and intune orchestra could keep together themselves but it's very hard, especially for those on the edges as they can sometimes not even hear the other side, so the conductor helps keep everyone together.
Getting a false cue from the 'authority figure' creates an immediate choice with no time to think and the following will happen:
>Good students
Will get confused but ignore it, as they know for a fact it's not time yet.
>Mediocre students
Will start hesitantly playing thinking they were somehow off in counting the conductor's cue isn't the only cue to pay attention to anyway either
>Bad students
Will be happy they're done waiting and start playing

Dude, what the fuck? How is the conductor unnecessary? If he wasn't there who would drive the fucking train?

Sarcasm is obvious
#75 - xexion (06/14/2015) [-]
You need all members perfectly intune in order to not need one - that meaning that everyone is 100% in synch. Which is pretty much unrealistic, hence the conductor.

Alright, thanks for clearing up. I never did it in a real high class orchestra, it was just six years throughout high school and college
