Actually, if memory serves right, the ball part's nearly indestructible. It's incredibly tough, while the tail is the exact opposite.

Not nearly indestructible but incerdibly strong nevertheless. It's like that because outer layer cools down almost instantly but the inner part cools slower building up huge tensile stress pointing "inwards" and compressive stress on the outer layer. It constantly pulls itself together so to speak making it strong. While it's more or less round blows to the round part don't do much damage, even if you strike it with a huge hammer because applied force has the same vector as the forces inside which gave the structure it's toughness.. However the tail doesn't have a round shape and it acts like a starting point to disrupt the stability and stress built up inside destroys the whole thing on it's own.

It's glass thats melted and dropped into water to cool it off, making the drop shape. The round head part is strong enough to withstand a hammer blow, but if you break the tail the whole thing explodes because of the way the tension is inside it.
