A simple graph has an x direction and a y direction. They don't mean much by themselves, they're just different directions.
You want to find out the value of one direction, based on the other. If your equation is y=mx+b, then you are trying to find y, because the equation is set up as Y equals something else.
To find what Y is, we have to know where we are finding y. We are finding Y at X, because in Y=mX+b, m and b are just numbers and only x can change, so X must be deciding where we are finding y. X is our location on the graph.
So starting with Y=mX, we see that Y is equal to X multiplied by a number. If the number is five, then Y is always 5 multiplied by x.
If x=1, then y=1(5) or 5
x=2, then y=2(5)or 10
So we can see that as x increases, Y also increases, but Y is increasing much faster, seen by x=2 and y=10. Thus the line is steep pointing up to the right.
If we have Y=3, then think again, what is Y at x=1?
There is no x in Y=3, so at any X, Y still just equals 3, making the graph a horizontal line, up above the x axis, always the same distance from the X axis because the X doesn't have any effect on the Y.
So, if we have Y=5x+3, we have x multiplied by 5, which means Y increaes quickly compared to x, and we have Y=3 which moves everything upwards. There is no X modifying the 3, so we know that no matter what 5x is, y is moved up 3.
You can think of Y=mx+b as two lines. Y=mx combined with Y=b.
If you draw both, and add the values, you will get the correct line, because that is what the equation Y=mx+b is doing.
Notice in the picture, that the blue line is the red line placed on the orange line.
Mint + lemon itself is great to add taste.
