#124 - It's from 1997, what did you expect?  [+] (10 new replies) 07/18/2014 on Fallout: New Vegas 0

Lots of good things came from 1997 that are still good...
User avatar #126 - themarineelite (07/18/2014) [-]
Fallout 1 being one of them.
User avatar #127 - aabbccddeeffgghhii (07/18/2014) [-]
Eh, depends what you're into i suppose.
User avatar #129 - themarineelite (07/18/2014) [-]
Fallout 1 and 2 I agree are one of the hardest games to get into. Because at the beginning you start with so little and it seems 10x more frustrating than it is in 3 and New Vegas. But once you get Power Armor and Miniguns, thats when you get satisfied.
User avatar #132 - aabbccddeeffgghhii (07/18/2014) [-]
"once you get 10 hours into the game and fumbled 90% of it, its amazing!"

I never like games where it gets good ... Ammount of hours in. 1-3 hours i can handle but more than 5 and it loses all my attention. Gaming should be fun, not a chore.

(But a different age, a different game.)
User avatar #133 - themarineelite (07/18/2014) [-]
It was also mean't to be a game that you play over long periods of time. Speed running in the originals is INCREDIBLY hard but the games themselves had a lot of exploration value. If you never played them before that is.
User avatar #136 - aabbccddeeffgghhii (07/18/2014) [-]
I could never get into the exploration bit of fallout 1. You click on a map, go to a place, maybe get killed by scorpians, maybe find Shady Sands, Junktown, the Hub, what ever.

Then inside you wander around and its drab as fuck.

The world never drew me in. However, I REALLY loved, and I mean fucking had to clean my keyboard loved, the fact that when you talked to people you could type shit in and if a keyword popped, they'd talk about it. Made interactions much more enjoyable and they felt more organic like that.

Apart from that though there was nothing i really liked about the game. Don't get me wrong, i didn't hate it. Just wasn't my cup of tea.
User avatar #137 - themarineelite (07/18/2014) [-]
I understand. However if you still like Fallout 1 you may want to check this out www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/48095/? This team is recreating Fallout 1 completely in the New vegas engine. The travel system will be the same as Fallout 1 but the gameplay itself will be New Vegas.

Nope, you have to have a degree first and score high enough on the Asvab to try for OCS school. Mind you it's a lot harder now, so try and get high grades as close to or above a 4.0. since you are basically competing against all the other candidates.

Also a Associates will not work you do need a Bachelors. Good luck man.

User avatar #128 - medewu (07/12/2014) [-]
Do you happen to know his full scores over. or like it will say a flat out number. basically 97th percentile is good. I fer one scored a 94 on my Asvab test. so all the jobs were open to me which included OCS, and so forth. I just didn't have a degree or I would have taken it.
User avatar #131 - elcreepo (07/12/2014) [-]
No, I didn't ask what all his scores where. Just knew he did really good even on the engineering part (though he's not an engineer nor trained to be one).

His recruiter told him that with his scores he can have whatever job he wants. He doesn't have a degree, but can he still get into OCS if he gets his degree after basic? He's going to Fort Benning I believe, in August.

For some reason he wanted to start from the ground up in the National Guard.
User avatar #135 - medewu (07/12/2014) [-]
Yeah, then he scored amazingly high. He can go to basic, ship out as come back from basic E1 depending if he went active or not take college classes. make sure to tell him to do amazing like I said before, 4.0 or better because it's a competition basically for the Officer spots. But yeah tell him good look, he'll have fun ;)
User avatar #139 - elcreepo (07/12/2014) [-]
He's not going to active duty since it's reserves

I think, anyway. If he does I don't mind, since seeing combat might be just the thing he's looking for out of life before he settles down.

But great, his dream is to serve the country and I really want to see him succeed. My cousin is an army wife herself and while it's challenging it's also rewarding.

User avatar #77 - freakyorange (07/05/2014) [-]
That actually isn't true. The only form of supression of the radiation is the concrete they poured on it. Uranium 235 (The form of uranium that was used by Chernobyl) has a half life of 703,800,000 years. We're a few months over 28 years into that. If you don't know how half lives work, the term comes from how long it takes for the material to decay halfway. It divides itself in half after each time period, meaning it goes from 703,800,000 to 351,900,000 and then to 175,950,000 and so on.

Basically, It's never going to be safe to live in again for the known possible future.
User avatar #103 - smokingman (07/05/2014) [-]
Wut?
I appreciate the effort, but that's not how halflife works.
#105 - freakyorange (07/05/2014) [-]
Taken from wikipedia; "Half-life (t½) is the amount of time required for a quantity to fall to half its value as measured at the beginning of the time period."

Image is a chart of it. Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant?
User avatar #107 - smokingman (07/05/2014) [-]
I know what halflife is, but:

You first say that uraniums's halflife is 703,800,000 years.

Then you say that, past this time, its halflife becomes 351,900,000 years.

Which makes absolutely no sense.
I don't think I misunderstood anything.
User avatar #108 - freakyorange (07/05/2014) [-]
maybe my math was wrong. Hold up, I'll check.
User avatar #109 - smokingman (07/05/2014) [-]
No, no, not the math, it's the logic.

The halflife is constant, it's the quantity that is halved.
User avatar #110 - freakyorange (07/05/2014) [-]
Then I guess I'm an idiot, too. Either way, it's still a long time.
User avatar #130 - fistpump (07/05/2014) [-]
You need to take into account that half-life is not something that is literal.
A newly-formed and perfectly preserved radioactive isotope with a half life of 10 years will not degrade to half of it's original potency exactly 10 years after it is created, it will constantly degrade over time, and people have measured the rate at which every known isotope degrades, and we have used that to predict how long it will take for each isotope to degrade to half of its original potency.
This means that an area that is highly exposed to our new radioactive isotope will take up to 10 years to become completely radiation-free, as-opposed to it taking exactly 10 years.
The isotope could reach a point where it is no longer dangerous to humans, yet still could not have degraded to even half of it's potency, it all depends on the amount of radioactive substance. Although the initial amount of radioactive substance in Pripyat was huge (enough to kill you should you walk there unprotected for just a few minutes, even seconds in some areas) the amount there now is relatively scarce. You can walk around the town unprotected for at least a few hours before you should probably consider hauling ass.
The reason why it is reasonably safe now by comparison to 20 years ago is because of the weather. Environmental factors. Rain can dilute and wash away the radioactive particles, the soil can churn and bury them, and the wind can blow radioactive debris and particles away.
Scientists predict that Pripyat will be completely safe (not free of radiation, but still safe) in around 600 years. It's a long time, sure, but it's not exactly the foreseeable future.
User avatar #131 - fistpump (07/05/2014) [-]
Wow. I should have read this back before I posted it.
When I said "This means that an area that is highly exposed to our new radioactive isotope will take up to 10 years to become completely radiation-free, as-opposed to it taking exactly 10 years. " I was basically talking out my ass.
What I was trying to say is, it will take 10 years for the radiation to be halved, but it could take less time for humans to be able to inhabit the area again, because the radiation may have receded to a point where it is no longer dangerous.
Sorry about that.
User avatar #111 - smokingman (07/05/2014) [-]
Yeah, the consequences are pretty much the same, no Chernobyl trips for a couple of geological eras.
User avatar #112 - freakyorange (07/05/2014) [-]
Yeah. I mean, you can visit it, but only for a few hours, or maybe a day if you're brave.
User avatar #135 - assdoreponyfucker (07/05/2014) [-]
humans will probably develop some way to either kill of the uranium or even extract it, or maybe even develop new hazmat suits which are more efficient, the odds are we will find some way to make it work. Probably not in our lifetimes
User avatar #88 - themarineelite (07/05/2014) [-]
I guess I'm just an idiot then. I heard that you could walk around pripyat without protection but guess I heard wrong.
