When I in Florida last week, my friend and I were sitting around waiting for the sun to go down far enough that it wouldn't boil our skin, so we decided to watch TV for a while. An episode of Spongebob came on, it was one of the new ones. We decided to watch it to see just how ****** it was. We watched it for about 3 minutes and it made me sad.

Woob put out a new album a couple days ago and I'm listening to it now. It's pretty sweet yo. This is his second new release this year. What a gentleman!

Earlier I was at a friends house playing this table top game that takes all day long. **** is stressful and everyone ends up hating each other by the end of it. At least I won though.
User avatar #3869 to #3868 - themagicwizard ONLINE (07/03/2015) [-]
Lol, that's how I felt the last time I played Risk with my friends. minus the hating eachother part, though. Gotta play that again soon.

What a generous fellow!
User avatar #3870 to #3869 - ultrablue (07/03/2015) [-]
This game (Twilight Imperium) is like risk on crack. Risk with like space battles and a million different aspects like politics and different objectives besides killing etc. etc.

I think you'll like the new Woob. First of all the description for the album is classic: "‘Adaption‘ is a psychological thriller / horror musical adaptation of a story centered around a small coastal town’s abandoned video-arcade that mysteriously springs to life after midnight transforming all its unsuspecting visitors into the undead."

A lot of it is reminding me of the soundtrack to this movie that I watched recently called "Beyond The Black Rainbow." www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHoMMENsC8g

It's pretty different for Woob in some ways. There's a couple like industrial sounding songs on it, mixed in with the ambient. But it's dang good.

Jesus, that's terrifying. I just skipped around a little and around 27:32 there's like a far off sound that sounds like some sort of monster droning in the distance. Perhaps that big kraken like tentacle in the water. Regardless, this sounds like a pretty neat project. I kinda wish it were split into separate tracks just for my sanity, but the sounds are great regardless.
User avatar #3873 to #3872 - themagicwizard ONLINE (07/03/2015) [-]
Yeah, was thinking the same thing about separate tracks. I haven't listened to the full thing yet, but it sounded pretty gucci.

Yar, I've been keeping an eye on that label. Lots of interesting stuff coming out. I've been thinking about getting that Sea of Black album, it sounds pretty cool too.

You remembered! We did our first radio show in a couple weeks last night. It was pretty half-assed though. Maybe next week we'll be back in the groove.

Also, good news: I just finished listening to my first 3 hour album, The Fellowship of the Ring complete recordings. Maybe I'll check out that album you showed me after all.
User avatar #3835 to #3834 - ultrablue (06/26/2015) [-]
The Fellowship of the Ring complete recordings? What's that? Like LOTR soundtrack with B-sides? heh

I'll be sure to tune in to the show next week. I feel like my blood has been craving it
User avatar #3836 to #3835 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/26/2015) [-]
I guess it's just everything that was recorded for it. There can't be too much in it that wasn't used, the theatrical cut of the movie is just under 3 hours long. The official regular edition soundtrack is only like 1h15m though.
User avatar #3837 to #3836 - ultrablue (06/26/2015) [-]
Oh yeah, I got all of those. So ya, I guess basically the equivalent of B-sides.

I went to a sweet bike trail in NY then went swimming yesterday, which was cool. I didn't sleep the night before, which was not cool. Today I went to a health food store like an hour away with a friend to pick up a single thing for his mom, which was silly.

Teoyeezy and I had a challenge going on where we'd only listen to albums with grayscale covers for this week, but we've both given up on it. Too much good color stuff.

I've been listening to this guy for a little while. I get some really weird vibes from his other album, which is him playing keyboard and accordion over a drum machine. I love it, but it's just really odd. Like you're in some retro-futuristic Ethiopia. Here's the first track so you can see what I mean:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=-taLoaGcA30
User avatar #3843 to #3842 - ultrablue (06/26/2015) [-]
The first song is pretty nice. I like the lounge vibes I'm getting. I could see myself walking around town to this song.

The second one yeah is a bit eh. It's alright, but it kinda just repeats over and over again with little variation.
User avatar #3844 to #3843 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/26/2015) [-]
Yeah, all the tracks have those drum machine rhythms going on throughout the whole thing. Super low budget. On Shemonmuanaye I'm listening more to that weird accordion than anything else. I don't get too hung up on the repetition of the drums and bass, they just seem like a background for him to play keys and accordion over. Although, the fact that is just a repeating beat is part of why it weirds me out a little. I laughed at that the first time I skimmed through all the tracks.

Tche Belew (the album the first song's from) is a straight up casual groovefest.
User avatar #3845 to #3844 - ultrablue (06/26/2015) [-]
Idk the accordion parts sounded pretty repetitive too to me. I can forgive a repetitive beat if the rest is still interesting (I mean, a lot of instrumental music has a repetitive beat).

I could get down with the Tche Belew album though. Checking out some other songs and they're all pretty neat

Speaking of a groovefest, I've been listening to one of The Souljazz Orchestra's older albums lately. This song has been my ******* ultimate jam the last few weeks www.youtube.com/watch?v=ei9hzJkEhv8
User avatar #3846 to #3845 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/26/2015) [-]
I'm not hearing the repetition in the accordion. That and the keyboard are riffing off eachother as it progresses. He's using a pretty funky scale too. I think there's one other song he uses it in, but the rest are all major, easy going sounding.

I still have to check out Souljazz. I've had 2 of their album in itunes for like a year and a half. It's criminal because they're so groovy. I need to check out more funk too. This song is great.
User avatar #3847 to #3846 - ultrablue (06/26/2015) [-]
It's not that he's playing literally the exact some melody over and over again, but it all blends together so it all sounds incredibly too similar to me. Something like that. If that song was like 2 minutes long I'd be down with it haha.

Get on the Souljazz train asap. Dat world/afrobeat/funk/jazzy/groovy. I wouldn't say it's necessarily more groovy or funky than Inner Fire (the other album I have from them) but it's certainly more upbeat and happy sounding so it usually puts me in a good mood haha.
User avatar #3848 to #3847 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/26/2015) [-]
Yeah, I can see that. I'm not really a fan of a lot of improvised stuff because it all ends up blending together to me.

Inner Fire is one of the ones I've been sitting on all this time. I'll listen to it one day...

User avatar #3811 to #3790 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
It wouldn't shut up! For 4 hours!

I haven't watched all the episodes together in a while. I'm waiting until it's close to December and I'm going to get my friend who's a Star Wars nut to come over and watch them all. I also intend to finish KotOR again before then. Hopefully KotOR II as well. I haven't played that in way too long.

I like III partially because the CG technology finally caught up to what they were trying to do with it. Also because it's a tragedy which I enjoy in a sad kind of way. Action sci fi tragedy, what's not to like? It's not as doofy of a film as I and II on top of that. it's the winner of the prequel trilogy for me for those and some other reasons.
User avatar #3812 to #3811 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
I have a problem with it mainly because it's very predictable. I'm not sure they had anyway to avoid it really, because it was the end to a story in which we already knew how it was going to end. I think the main offender is the scene with Palpatine and he tells Annakin that you can save people from dying with the dark force and after that it's like, ok, end of movie, know exactly how this will play out now. Also, General Grevious is a ******* great character, but he's barely in the movie and he dies so easily after they build him up to be a bad ass through out the movie. I'm having a problem with cool evil characters that are too easily defeated lately... Sherlock did it recently too.

But whatever, it's still aight. Episode I is best prequel though.
User avatar #3813 to #3812 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
Yeah, not to say it's without flaws. Grievous was not used to his potential. Kinda like Kai Leng in Mass Effect 3 except they didn't totally destroy his character. III has it's dumb stuff too, like what they decided to do with Luke, not that they could really have done anything else because it had to line up with the original trilogy. For a movie that's kinda just bridging the gap between II and IV, I think it did a good job and was entertaining. Episode I just doesn't make sense to me.
User avatar #3814 to #3813 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
I feel like we've had this conversation before at some point...

Let's just agree that Episode VII better be ******* amazing.

Also, have you seen some of the gameplay footage for Battlefront 3? I know you had your concerns before, but it looks farking sweet. Especially the co-op gameplay. Perhaps we could do that together eh? 8D

User avatar #3816 to #3815 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
Did you hear that they are making it backwards compatible now? That might be a reason to invest.

But I understand your hesitation. It is a significant chunk of change. Maybe Battlefront 3 will be so amazing when it comes out it'll convince. Also, let's not forget Halo 5!
User avatar #3817 to #3816 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
"Did you hear that they are making it backwards compatible now?"
Jesus Christ, **** Microsoft. If that's true, they're either retarded or evil.

I really doubt it, but we'll see. I dunno how Halo 5 will be. It seems like more 343i wankery like Halo 4 right now.
User avatar #3818 to #3817 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
How come? I guess I should add that it'll be on every console, like as an update I'm assuming. You don't have to buy a whole new Xbox One to get the backwards compatibility, if that was your concern.

I was just watching the Halo 5 campaign demo and it looks pretty neat. Then again I did enjoy 4 so that's just me. I'm always down with Halo games really.
User avatar #3819 to #3818 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
Why wouldn't they just have shipped it from day 1 with backwards compatibility if they were going to do it?

Halo 4 just seemed like they were throwing a bunch of stuff at you for the sake of action and none of it carried any weight. I know that's silly to say about a game like Halo, but it just felt forced and rushed. I hope they can pull off a quality game. From the trailer I saw, it looked like there's some juicy lore in there, which I liked. We'll see.
User avatar #3820 to #3819 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
Because they're weird and they tried to be weird so all the gamers were like **** you, and they realized they were gonna lose money if they didn't stop being weird. Hence, more gaming sensibilities, less Kinect. It's here now, so I'm cool with it. Not like I was gonna get rid of my 360 anyway, but whatev. It's good for people like my friend whose 360 is falling apart at the seams because it's an old one.

I like 4 and I hope they fix my few gripes with it, 1 being the story was kinda confusing from what I remember, and 2 I disliked a few of the multiplayer levels and there weren't even that many in the first place, so yeah... improve the level design in multiplayer. Halo 2 had the best maps for that **** imo. SO DO THAT AGAIN, GUYS
User avatar #3821 to #3820 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
Reach had some pretty dank maps, but most of them were thrown together with forge parts and looked lame as dook. I think I only played through Halo 4's campaign once and I just had a bad impression of it. Shooting guys was fun, but the story was executed really poorly. Way too much new junk tossed in there haphazardly and almost no reference to the old junk that would give it some context.
User avatar #3822 to #3821 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
Yeah Reach's forge maps got on my nerves. They should definitely put more effort into creativity for multiplayer maps, and make a good amount without sacrificing quality.

I agree with the story in 4. I seriously didn't take anything away from it. Perhaps I should play it again before 5. Maybe we could both stop being lazy and get live and then play it together.
User avatar #3823 to #3822 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
Now there's an idea I can get behind.

Reach actually had a lot of really great maps made in forge, especially for Slayer and Double Team. They all just looked like **** .
User avatar #3824 to #3823 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
True. Lazy assholes.

Also, speaking of new **** and why you should get a new system eventually. Uhhhh new Mass Effect? Cream dream. It doesn't come out till late 2016 so you have plenty of time to mull it over before you inevitably decided to get one because the lure of a new Mass Effect game is too much for you to overcome.
User avatar #3825 to #3824 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
I dunno, the wounds caused by Mass Effect 3's unprecedented ******** are still fresh. I'll see how I feel about Bioware in a year and a half.

This ***** ...

Well, anyway. If you liked it, they recently released this new thing. Basically live improvised performances, and it's almost 4 hours long. darkroomtheband.bandcamp.com/album/the-rest-is-noise

I've been listening it today and I'm still not done lol. Getting there though. It's pretty ******* noice. I just love guitar based, psychedelic sounding ambient.
User avatar #3797 to #3796 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I'm not going to listen to that any time soon. 4 hours is more than a bit much. I do like Gravity's Dirty Work though. I'll bookmark it and scope out some of the tracks.
User avatar #3798 to #3797 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
Well it ain't like you gotta listen to it in one sitting. I sure as hell haven't and it's my first time listening to it all haha.

Don't forget that Sufjan has put out about 4 hours worth of Xmas music as a little comparison of excessive lol.

His 4 hours of Christmas music are all broken up into manageable little 20 minute EPs though. And all the tracks are like 1 - 4 minutes. All this ambient wankery is like 20 minutes per track, which I'm down with on occasion. Not as frequently, though.
User avatar #3804 to #3803 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
If I may rebuttal.

The description of the album says almost every other 2 tracks (the almost being there is one by itself) were a recorded live performance. So, if you listen to 2 at a time, as they were originally recorded as, it's very manageable.

Hopefully the world hasn't ended by then!

Well, still listening to this album. Was watching Star Wars earlier. I've been buying the movies on DVD/Bluray recently cause I had the original triology and Episodes I and II only on VHS. So I bought the prequels a couple months back and I just got the originals yesterday, so I watched a New Hope tonight. And I had some pizza during. Oh, I also bought Interstellar on the same trip. Thought you might like to know that heehee.

Sup wit u.
User avatar #3809 to #3808 - themagicwizard ONLINE (06/18/2015) [-]
That sounds pretty dern rad, I tell ya. Episodes I and II are pretty poop tier, but I still like to watch them sometimes. I just remembered that Episode VII comes out in a few months. Crazy. I'm going to re-watch the LotR trilogy again. I might read them again too, after I finish the 3rd Dune book. RIP in peace, Christopher Lee. I'll rip on Interstellar some other time. I've been listening to the soundtrack a lot recently.

Today was the nicest it's been outside in a while, like 80° and mostly sunny. I spent all afternoon with a wood chipper not having fun. I'm just hanging out watching Adventure Time right now.
User avatar #3810 to #3809 - ultrablue (06/18/2015) [-]
It's funny, cause I think Episodes I and II are a lot better than III. I already knew I liked Episode I the most out of the prequels, but after watching all 3 in a short period of time, I realized that III has to be my least favorite, for reasons I won't get into now. And no, I'm not trying to be contrary just because I'm talking to you

May Christopher Lee walk the long bridge to Valhalla in peace. Such a great man.

So hyped for Episode VII though. That's partly why I'm watching the movies now; to prepare myself. Also, I haven't watched them all the way through in a few years now, so I'm due for this.

The weather was the opposite here. ******* rainy and gray all day. Partly why I chose today to listen to that Darkroom album. It fit the atmosphere well.

Did the wood chipper make fun of you? Is that why it wasn't any fun?

I'm listening to Pomegranates by Nicolas Jaar.

It's a fookin trip, m8. It's taken me about 24 hours to really get through the whole thing.

Not Muse, Spirit
User avatar #3746 to #3745 - themagicwizard ONLINE (05/20/2015) [-]
Hey, you're just in time for him to release something else! He put out an EP called Nymphs II a couple days ago and it's a trip as well. The man can do no wrong.

Pomegranates is so good. I think it's the last track, Muse, where there's this really intense synth buildup and it just cuts out to a low volume recording of room noise or something. Dunno if he's showing a sense of humor or he's just a weirdo. Probably both. I heard he's working on another soundtrack or 2 for different films or documentaries.
User avatar #3748 to #3746 - ultrablue (05/20/2015) [-]
It's good, and intensely varied. It goes from like low key electronic jams, to experimental noise out of control **** , to like somber piano diddleys like the last track, which I'm listening to now. I actually just finally decided to download and give Space is Only Noise a full listen the other night, and then I went ahead and got Pomegranates right after. Both are good **** . Will check out that new EP soon I'm sure.

After going like over a week without downloading or buying any new music, I'm willing to go crazy and get a bunch of **** atm. Thinking about finally getting Flashlight by Bonobo and probably Arterial by Lusine since I'm due to give those a full listen as well.
User avatar #3749 to #3748 - themagicwizard ONLINE (05/20/2015) [-]
His 2 song EP called Don't Break My Love is one of my favorite things ever. It's some seriously excellent electronic music.

I remember Flashlight being pretty groovy. Arterial definitely is. Lusine has been a pretty constant fixture in what I've been listening to since it got nice out.
User avatar #3750 to #3749 - ultrablue (05/20/2015) [-]
I'll have to delve even deeper into Mr. Jaar's discography then. I actually almost had to kick a baby because I couldn't find a link to Pomegranates, but I got there eventually.

The Waiting Room is like a go to now for me when I don't know what to play in my car when other people are in it. I don't know why, but it's always one of the first things that comes to mind.
User avatar #3751 to #3750 - themagicwizard ONLINE (05/20/2015) [-]
I wish I knew...

Lol, for some reason I never got a notification for this comment. Oh well. Nico Jaro is an exceptional dude. He's definitely worth checking out.

The Waiting Room is perfect for this time of the year. It's been that and Night and Day by Oriol that I keep going back to because their mood is so fitting.
User avatar #3752 to #3751 - ultrablue (05/20/2015) [-]
For whatever reason, I haven't bumped Night and Day as much as I should have since I got it many months back. Perhaps I'll play it tomorrow while delivering. But not until dusk. It seems like that would be the most fitting time of day.

Oh god, that reminds me. A week or two ago, I played that Long Arm album I've been obsessed with while delivering, right around dusk, and **** ... I was driving in this far off wooded area, and it can be a bit of a drive depending on how far in you go.. one lane each way and all that. Anyway, it was such a great time. I love that time of day, and with that kind of scenery + minimal cars + fitting music. Good ******* times, brah.
User avatar #3753 to #3752 - themagicwizard ONLINE (05/20/2015) [-]
That sounds just lovely. I haven't really been driving around too much at night recently. On the way back from hiking a few days ago I was riding shotgun in my friend's car and we had a Carrie & Lowell singalong/feelalong sesh in the front while our 3 other friends were laughing/yelling about stuff in the back seat. Inconsistent feelings/10, good stuff. I was hiking in a different spot with different friends today and we were bumping Neon Indian and M83. The chillin was at a maximum this afternoon.

is it too nice out for Ohrenbetäubende Stille after dark these days?
User avatar #3754 to #3753 - ultrablue (05/20/2015) [-]
Absolutely not. Ohrenbetäubende Stille is universally enjoyable regardless of weather. I started listening to that album a year ago and the weather was pretty much like this. I need a nice heat lightning storm to roll in though like last year because that was such a cool experience, driving, watching lightning, and listening to that album.

I wish I had more friends that liked chill music. Alas, it isn't very common among my group of friends. I don't think anyone I hang with a lot would bump any Sufjan. I feel like I'm the only one who likes anything folky.

I posted a status on facebook a few weeks back that was something along the lines of "I want it to be warmer at night so I can sit outside, drink a beer, and listen to sad folk music," and my one friend was like "Ditto except for 1930's jazz music" and I liked his comment but internally I was like "get the **** out."

Interstellar got some pretty decent airtime tonight. I think we were ragging on it right in the beginning, then we just kept bringing it up as part of some strange, abstract fiction we were weaving throughout the show.

I dunno if we could have played that, but I wish we could. It would have been perfect.
User avatar #3712 to #3711 - ultrablue (04/09/2015) [-]
Yeah. The first thing I heard was Portishead; I think you'll appreciate this, right before the beat drop I logged into skype, and that log in sound, that WOOOOOOP, timed perfectly with the beat drop. It was all, WOOOOOOP BAH ch ch BAH. BAH ch ch BAH. Sexy.

I also remember TNP, some cool electronic jams I didn't recognize, and of course some of the customary terrible rock/metal.
User avatar #3713 to #3712 - themagicwizard ONLINE (04/09/2015) [-]
Right after Portishead was We Share Our Mother's Health by The Knife, some J Dilla and Nachtmusik by Seams. I think shibe would be proud of me tonight, I played a song by Republika, one of the post punk slav bands he likes. Actually, maybe he'll hate me because there's a slight chance they'd get some exposure from that and not make music just for him anymore. They might be disbanded now though, so it could be safe.

User avatar #3720 to #3719 - ultrablue (04/09/2015) [-]
Hhaha well when you play dark ambient, no one will want to mess with you cause that ****** too spoopy. Unless of course the noise part of their name implies that they usually play noise music, in which case this should be a battle for the ages.

Yeah, I haven't listened to the full album, but we played one song from it on the radio last night and it was super feely. All sung in his whispery, emotional, sad Sufjan voice. Tear jerking stuff, man.

Yes, I definitely feel the same vibe going on. I should get that album soon before winter ends and all this snow melts so I can take it on a wintry drive.

And yes, Sabled Sun is a new go to spooky music friend. Though it's not all that spooky, just more kind of unsettling when you think about the album in context with its concept.

Absolutely. You gonna check out Better Call Saul? Obviously it probably can't REALLY live up to Breaking Bad, but I'm still pretty intrigued to at least watch the first few episodes that come out to see if it's good.

That's some minimalist beat driven ambient **** dude. Something about that inner art and the fact that we were just talking about it makes me think this could have fit in some cool Breaking Bad scenes.

All that scummy green, no doubt.

Yeah, I'll check it out. I'm expecting good things, It looks like it'll probably have a lighter tone than Breaking Bad. It could be cool, we'll see. I don't think I even started watching Breaking Bad until it was in its 3rd season or something.

I actually didn't start watching until the very last part of season 5 came on lol. So I had to rush through it all so I could finish it so people/the internet wouldn't spoil it for me.

User avatar #3600 to #3599 - ultrablue (01/27/2015) [-]
Definitely awesome. I haven't listened to as many symphonies as I should have.

The last time I remembered hearing extended music in this vein was back last year when I went to London; the last night some of us went to a concert (this actually, just found the link in my email from last year www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org/belmont/faure-requiem ). It was pretty cool; obviously not a whole single symphony though. This would be much cooler to witness live. My friend has seen this tour (I think) that goes around playing the music to the LotR movies, I THINK synced up with parts from the movies. That's definitely been on my list to see for awhile now if it ever comes around again.

Also, good news! Another pentagram was created today, the biggest one yet! Probably 35-40ft across, at least. I live on a lake that's frozen and covered in a few inches of snow right now, so 2 friends and I went out and made a big ol' pentagram pointing at somebody's house. It's way too big to get a good picture of from the ground, but the houses up on the hill opposite the one in this picture should have a great view.

Cool, is it another sci-fi thing or something different?
User avatar #3565 to #3564 - ultrablue (01/26/2015) [-]
Haha, IT IS GOOD FOR ME, MR. POORY POOR!

It's apparently the second part of a trilogy that started with Have Landed, so yeah, I guess it's all part of this time travel thing. It's not as diverse as Have Landed, but it does kinda sound more sci-fi-ish, but definitely darker and more kind of foreboding. It's definitely sweet, I've only listened to it twice so far, but first impressions are good.
User avatar #3566 to #3565 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/26/2015) [-]
Damn man, that hurts...

Sounds awesome. So there are at least 2 album trilogies going on, Woob and Geotic. I'm behind on both of them. But they're both so good! I'm just awful.

Aphex Twin came out with a new EP, I dunno if you saw that or listened to it. It's great, though.
User avatar #3567 to #3566 - ultrablue (01/26/2015) [-]
OH DANG GEOTIC! Almost forgot, gotta buy that one next. No worries, I'm probably willing to share all those with you... probably...

Haven't heard the new Aphex. I'll check some of it out though. Still never dled a full album of his, but maybe soon (I'm pretty sure I said that last time I talked about him with you though lol).
User avatar #3568 to #3567 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/26/2015) [-]
I don't need your damn handouts, OBAMA!

This one's pretty short, under 30 minutes. Assuming the title is truthful, it's a bunch of acoustic instruments being controlled by computers... the title is Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 EP.
User avatar #3569 to #3568 - ultrablue (01/26/2015) [-]
Nah, I can't be Obama, if I were I'd be a lizard man person thing.

Just previewed some of it. Sounds really interesting, I may actually have to dl this. Something about the concept reminds me of OPN. It's like if AP did an OPN album or somethin.
User avatar #3570 to #3569 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/26/2015) [-]
I dunno, I've only heard synth and sample stuff from OPN. Aphex has been around for a long time and this definitely seems like something he'd do.

I listened to Returnal by OPN last night, sitting in the dark. The first track is like a noisy hurricane of sound with what sounds like MC Ride yelling from another dimension. Then immediately after that it turns into serene, calming synth stuff. I really enjoyed it, you might too if you haven't heard it.
User avatar #3571 to #3570 - ultrablue (01/26/2015) [-]
I mean like.. the way it's sampled I guess is what I mean. Like, taking weird/out of the ordinary things/samples and then constructing them together to make something in their style. That's kind of what I meant if that makes sense.

That one is actual next on my list to get from him. Currently I only have R Plus Seven and Replica. From what I've heard of Returnal, your description sounds on point. That one sounds so like loud at times but then also very pretty as well in different parts, like you said. Definitely gonna check it fully soon.
User avatar #3572 to #3571 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/26/2015) [-]
I dunno if it was even sampled, I think it's just instrumental recordings. Like instruments with stuff stuck in them to make them sound weird.

My descriptions are always on point.
User avatar #3573 to #3572 - ultrablue (01/26/2015) [-]
I dunno, something about it reminded me of OPN. I dunno what but something. It's a mystery I guess...

User avatar #3539 to #3538 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/17/2015) [-]

#3540 to #3539 - ultrablue (01/17/2015) [-]
Still, I don't think it's really my cup of tea

Maybe someday I'll mature and be cool enough to listen to it though
User avatar #3541 to #3540 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/17/2015) [-]
Maybe someday...

I'm usually not into noise at all. Something about that one really gets me though. I think it's because it's not straight up loud, harsh sounds smashing into your ears the whole time. You can totally hear layers in it, and a lot of the sounds are just really cool. That and the organ and synth stuff, which is always good.

I've been listening to a bunch of stuff by this composer Alexander Scriabin today, and I'm learning some short piano pieces by him. He was a really weird guy towards the end of his life. He was in the middle of putting together this multimedia project that was supposed to bring an end to the world at this ceremony in the Himalayas, then he died. Such a shame.

User avatar #3542 to #3541 - ultrablue (01/17/2015) [-]
I mean, checking that EP out again, and I think I thought this the first time you showed it to me, the 2nd track I find a lot more pleasurable than the first. At least the first half of the first song. Too much chaos.. the 2nd song is chaotic but sounds a lot more purposeful to my ears, where as the 1st sounds more random. I don't mind a burst of noise here or there (the 2nd song on the Cheese Stank EP has that) but usually I can only take so much.

That's a pretty hideously hilarious amazing concept lol. I like this you linked me. You could probably do a great silent animated film to this. It's pretty dynamic in that way.
User avatar #3543 to #3542 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/17/2015) [-]
He called the whole event "Mysterium". It was supposed to last 7 days and every human, plant and animal was supposed to be in attendance. The part of music for the beginning of it that he had partially composed was picked up by another guy in the 1990s who kind of brought it together and filled in spots so it would be playable. It ended up being about 3 hours long. It sounds ominous and mysterious as **** . It probably would have been a pretty wild occasion if it ever happened.

This is pretty awesome. I need to find the time to listen to the whole thing. Perhaps I should just listen to it while delivering pizzas. It would still probably take me 2-3 days even then lol.

Scriabin sounds like a real bro. A true fellow visionary of insanity!
User avatar #3545 to #3544 - themagicwizard ONLINE (01/17/2015) [-]
Apparently he was way into mysticism and used his synesthesia with sounds and colors to make his own tonal system which he kept developing over the course of his life.

He was one of those guys that people were either in awe of or disgusted by. His situation was like the opposite of an undiscovered artist who becomes famous after death. He was extremely famous during his lifetime, then after he died, the Soviets took over and didn't like his music so they basically banned it and he was forgotten for a long time.

You should definitely do it. Draw mystical symbols on the pizza boxes too.

I don't know when I'll listen to it in full. It's like 3 symphonies in a row. I know I'll marathon it at some point, though.
User avatar #3546 to #3545 - ultrablue (01/17/2015) [-]
lol it's cool to me to think that people like that existed back then. I know there were lots of weird creative people from every era, but you usually only hear about the boring ones.
