Don Jon, pretty decent story for a low budget movie

I know, but the obstacle isn't made to be the foreground theme, nor is it just one obstacle. If anything, it's a simple "man vs. self" story as the guy reacts to completely menial problems everyone faces. It's not like other movies where there's a giant, glaring problem that, while normal, isn't something you face on a regular basis like a divorce, or a run in with violent people . The guy has a simple existential crisis over how he handles his own love life.
The existential crisis I had over that exact thing in college was bigger.

I really do get what you're saying but I still disagree somewhat.
It's not very a very physical obstacle, I agree. It's more of a complication in his life and view of the world--a crisis, as you put it. And I definitely agree that the main character's problem is much more common and realistic than Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.
I do, however, think that it does become the foreground theme, and that the story wouldn't be very interesting if the main problem weren't made the main subject. Isn't the whole story about how the main character will deal with trying to understand love, and how some people around either fail at understanding it as well (like his superficial girlfriend) while some succeed to some extent (like the older, redhead woman)?
I would definitely call that "made to be the foreground theme".

What I'm getting at is the fact that they'll focus on it, but then they'll break away to go over something else that, while its still a problem, is only tangentially relevant to the original problem.
To put a blanket over it would be maybe "life is annoying because 'numerous tiny problems'"
#39 - migueldecervantes (08/22/2016) [-]
Okay, that's not true at all, and I think most would consider that bad storytelling (or "slice-of-life" maybe).
Don Jon had focus, a clear theme, a problem and a resolution. I don't remember it ever breaking off of the main plot. Can you give me an example of this happening?

He had problems with the first girl scarlet Johansen when the relationship ended. He would try to forget about it with shit like school and family, but the overarching concern would keep wedging it's way to the foreground while he tried to push it away as a concern. He was trying to stay prideful even though the ending of the relationship was somewhat stressful to him. It all came to a cusp when he was with his family until his sister chimed in to say that Scarlet's character was a bitch anyway, which could be considered the climax given the fact that was happened after was mostly falling action and conclusion.

What if anything in all that you've just said is not in line with the general problem that the character faces...? Or was it that by "only tangentially relevant" you meant "relevant but not the exact same thing as the problem"?
Because then you could say that fighting off the orcs at that castle was only tangentially relevant to dropping the ring into the fire-y place (I don't know LOTR that well, as you can see), but it still was relevant to it.
I still don't see the difference between Don Jon and 99.9% of all other stories.

Because there were key elements in his friendships being strained, as well as budding anger issues where his relationship issues were more a cause for conversation. Like his family was giving him shit for not settling down with a family before they even knew about Scarlet's character, and then those problems got exacerbated when they found out about her after the break up.

Oh, right, right. But I don't really think that his relationship with Sacrlett was the main complication--do you?
I think it's more about him trying to figure love out, and kind of being forced to do it by his circumstances (mostly Scarlett, but also that older redhead woman, his family and friends). The goal by which you evaluate and gauge the relevancy of all that happens in the story is his trying to make things better in his love life.
I think I'm starting to see what you mean. Don't let me put words into your mouth (or fingertips, whatever), but wouldn't it be that Don Jon's difficulty is more life-like than most movies and so it is concomitantly more vague, uncertain and unfocused than, say, a monster or alien invasion?
I love discussing stories.

Well that's just it, it's not. The overarching problem is that misunderstanding of how romance works, and it's shown via the little snippets where he interacts with friends, family, and acquaintences. And then it's resolved in the most stupidly simple ways where you get a minor character who before that point barely spoke, if at all, shitting a giant golden egg of wisdom on the table.
Like the main character wasn't even consciously aware of his dilemma. He was meandering through the movie under the assumption that Scarlet's character was just suddenly a crazy bitch, which confused him. And then when his sister told the family what was up, that's when it clicked for him what the problem even was.
