Nope. Not an ally. Not a foe, but not an ally.

Bah, I don't think it's a common misconception. Most people's knowledge about the Civil War is if not limited, restricted to American battles and American politics. Most people figure the War was basically an in-house affair. Which isn't entirely wrong. The influential countries of the time (e.g France, Germany, England), and the other countries in the region (e.g Mexico, Brazil, etc) mostly just played a waiting game, seeing who would win. Then they'd presumably back the winners. which is what eventually happened.

The common misconception in the US is that the British fought against the US because they were bitter about their independence. True, that some people in Britain were bitter, but they never supported the South
#151 - yodawgiheard (05/28/2015) [-]
Not as a whole. Some did. Some aristocrats saw (correctly I might add) the Southern aristocracy as an extension of their own, and were therefore sympathetic. Others were sympathetic for economic reasons. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if they were truly so gung-ho about ending slavery (and the links you provided are some things that I've never heard about, thank you), then why didn't they help the Union? Or not send armaments to the Confederacy (though they were hardly the only ones, the Confederacy got guns and parts from all over, including Mexico and Brazil), instead of just waiting it out and supporting the winner?
