Another possible explanation. The tree was exceptionally tall for its girth, and based on the greenery, it is no later than midsummer when the picture was taken. During a thunderstorm, the top of the tree gets struck by lightning, and the top branches took the brunt of the actual strike. The sap beneath the bark vaporizes, popping the bark off like a banana peel, with this result.

I'm not positive that this is what happened, but it's something.
