My name is not a reference to Harry Potter. I had no idea what it was when I heard the goddamn song. =_=

Half of them gave up at the beginning of this semester, although it was their main cursus. And the other half is way less motivated than they were back in September. "To speak Icelandic, there's only one way: Be Icelandic" as one of them said.
Icelandic isn't a language you wanna learn on a whim, you'll need devotion, patience, and courage...

No matter that how fluent in english both you and the Icelandic people would be, you'll never be culturally closer to them than a guy fluent in Icelandic.
Not to mention that if you intend to live here, you should consider integrating yourself to the country. I'll take it rather bad if the immigrants in my country wouldn't take the effort of learning my language.

Depending on where you start, if you already speak Danish/Norwegian/swedish Basically the same language with very different dialects you have like 20% of the language right there. If you only speak english/german/french etc it would have a lot higher difficulty

I am studying Norwegian... The irony here is that Norwegian itself is made up of more or less a dozen of dialects. I considered trying to study Icelandic with the few notions I had in Norwegian, but my friends dissuaded me.
But actually, knowing a scandinavian language will only help you etymologically. A Swedish lad will be helpless in front of Icelandic grammar

Well, alot of words have similar pronunciation between ex. norweigan and icelandic, not just the etymologically is the same. example:
English: My name is - Who are you?
Norweigan: Mitt navn er, - Hvem er du?
Icelandic: Mitt nafn er, - Hver ert þú? Hver ert thu?
And yes, alot is different in a big portion of the vocabulary. But far from impossible.
