>20x your population

That is exactly why these things are displayed are percents
It isn't relevant
Also when you scale shit down
U.S. Has a pop density of 84/sq. mile
Netherlands has a pop density of 1259/sq. mile

At first glance that means that there are more people in the same space in the Netherlands, so not only is you saying that the U.S. has a greater population meaningless, it would also imply that there should be MORE murders in the Netherlands since people are closer together.

EVEN IF you make compensation for the fact that America's population is so far spread out that every one of you could live in the state of virginia, it pretty much boils down to a cultural problem.

TL;DR Your opinion is shit and your people are violent

I will leave this argument with this final example of

If in a certain area, there is a high concentrations of murders, and in that same area is a lot of churches, do you blame the churches for the crime? No, there are other factors at play, because it is a city.

Percentages don't tell the reasons behind why a number is a way, it just tells a number
User avatar #210 - captnnorway (06/23/2015) [-]
but the numbers don't lie mate. More murders in America than netherlands and I'm willing to bet more than in Norway as well and you can't blame all that on size. Personally I believe it's because your prisons are based around the idea of punishing criminals, while in Norway and again I'm willing to bet in the netherlands it's a mix between punishing and rehabilitation.

Because of this, only 20% of our criminals return to jail, compered to your 52%. Much fewer criminals = less crime/murder. Actually, I know recidivism is about going to jail for the same crime, but that was a bitch to write so I gave up. My point still stands though, if somewhat worse than what I originally wrote.

thinkprogress.org/justice/2011/07/25/277771/norway-is-safe/ ye, I know it's some super liberal shit, but they include sources to their claims so I think it's cool.

New York city alone has nearly half of your population and 2,000 people/square mile, cities are the problems when it comes to crime compared to suburbia.

Again, we also have to consider standard of living in states that are equal to your countries size but worse off.
User avatar #29 - bokkos (06/22/2015) [-]
Still sounds like a shit place to live relative to the Netherlands.

Sweden (0.7 per 100,000 people) has a lower murder rate than the Netherlands (0.9 per 100,000 people) and the UK has 1 per 100,000 people. Don't really see how they are that bad, especially compared to places like Russia (9.2), Moldova (6.5) and Belarus (5.1).
User avatar #113 - trollmobile (06/23/2015) [-]
oh i wasn't talking about murder rate really, sweden is a complete failiure in terms of social policies, and the UK aswell, though not on as large a magnitude.
sweden has taken political correctness to such a level that their citizens no longer have free speech. not truly anyway.
User avatar #114 - Rockaman (06/23/2015) [-]
I'd agree with that on Sweden, but the UK is currently reversing some of the damage of poor social policy at the moment, making society fairer to those who are contributing to it (although it's still got a good way to go).
User avatar #115 - trollmobile (06/23/2015) [-]

This is all pretty recent, so you would need to be up to date to see it.

Things started changing pretty rapidly on the run up to the election, and the few months we've had since then.

quick search shows you netherlands has around 20 cities with 124k+ people, the USA has 218 cities with over 124k+
#204 - John Cena (06/23/2015) [-]
Dude. We're talking about percentages here, not straight numbers. It's all adjusted per capita. The number of people and places involved have nothing to do with the average cause of death.
User avatar #219 - syrenthra (06/23/2015) [-]
but numbers don't tell factors.

example

2 states with around the same population, but one has a higher crime/murder rate by a factor of 4.
Do you automatically assume that everyone in that state is just more violent?
The difference is that the higher crime state has mostly large cities, the other state is mostly rural or suburban
#33 - auryn (06/22/2015) [-]
Not only is this completely meaningless to me, since I don't see how it would be any less concerning.

But those numbers don't even remotely scale up.
User avatar #39 - syrenthra (06/22/2015) [-]
They completely scale up. Lets just look at the cities

If most crimes like murder are committed in large cities over 100k, then the fact that we have over 10 times more of them than your country, means that there will be more crimes committed.

If you believe that having 10x the locations for crime to be committed does not increase crime rate.

Also consider that in general, I would say that European living standards are better than a lot of places in America. To put it simply, if we removed about georgia, alabama, mississippi, and louisiana, our stats would probably be decreased
#160 - auryn (06/23/2015) [-]
Dude, do you even math?

That's only 10 times more larger cities, yet the murder rate is 600 times higher.

You call that scaling up?
User avatar #218 - syrenthra (06/23/2015) [-]
10x the cities but then the cities are also large and denser, if they were all split to be equal to 200-300k, then there would be over 20 or 30x the cities.

You aren't getting the fact that numbers don't tell the entire store, this is why stats are bullshit, stats don't tell you living conditions or population demographics which all would affect the crime stats, and I'm not trying to be discriminatory (Racism is bullshit because we are all humans, which is 1 race) but a lot of murders are black on black or other minorities, which in certain places in the south, become the majority, but still end up being violent.
#54 - wraithguard (06/22/2015) [-]
Another thing that people should consider is that the murder rates in the U.S. are in no way homogeneous. There's nothing about "American culture" which is one hell of a broad term anyway that promotes murder. You have to look at all the places in a case by case manor.
User avatar #56 - syrenthra (06/22/2015) [-]
which is basically what I'm getting at, just because we have a higher rate doesn't mean that the entire country is shit, it just means certain places are extremely shit that it overwrites the other places
User avatar #131 - Mickeyboi (06/23/2015) [-]
louisiana is great.
User avatar #169 - pokemonstheshiz (06/23/2015) [-]

A shit ton more major cities where murders are more likely to be committed

Yeah that still just seems like normal behaviour to me.
User avatar #55 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
yeah, its probably just how I described it, but take my word for it, it is hard for me to become comfortable with people, like I just had my first coffee date with a girl in september, this is as far as I've ever made it with a girl ( I learned really quick it wouldn't have worked out between us even though I could tell she was interested too)
User avatar #56 - limegreentomatoes (06/15/2015) [-]
Yeah to me it's still just normal behaviour, I'm exactly like that and I have never met a person who is too much of an exception.
User avatar #57 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
eh, maybe I have grown out of the awkward part, but still got the nerd and introvert part going
User avatar #58 - limegreentomatoes (06/15/2015) [-]
If I was gay I'd call you my soulmate.
You were expecting me to call you my soulmate in this spoiler, weren't you?
User avatar #59 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
That is nice and all but I think I already found mine when I met a girl through omegle 3 years ago
User avatar #60 - limegreentomatoes (06/15/2015) [-]
To be honest that sounds kinda sad
User avatar #61 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
Its hard to describe but she and I have had feelings for each other since we met and I've helped her through her depression, if it wasn't for the 2700 miles between us, we would be in a serious relationship
User avatar #62 - limegreentomatoes (06/15/2015) [-]
Okay it's a bit less sad now. It wouldn't be very sad at all but the 2700 miles makes it a bit sad again.
User avatar #64 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
sad as in you feel bad or sad as in pathetic? either way, living across a continent and in different countries sucks

User avatar #51 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
like i said somewhat awkward, I have a fairly good sized group of friends who aren't like me, its just hard for me to be comfortable with some people, but then there are people I will become comfortable with quite easily and have no problems, and to my knowledge, I'm no where near where some people on these cringe comps are at, I had my moments back in highschool that were cringe-y, but not autistic levels. Now stop posting na jk just messing around with the obediency thing
User avatar #52 - limegreentomatoes (06/15/2015) [-]

Well that will work if your kids will be similar to you.
Again, if anyone ever bothers to have kids with me, and they end up like me, it's better for me to straight up forbid shit, because I am an obedient little shit. So obedient in fact that I sometimes accidentally use it to make people angry. If someone tells me not to do it I don't, until they tell me to do it.
Which gets annoying when I want to talk to someone and they tell me to shut up.
User avatar #49 - syrenthra (06/15/2015) [-]
Well, if I have a kid with the kind of girl that is like me already, then it means our kid would be a introverted, somewhat awkward nerd, so yeah
