you'd consider yourself lucky if you get 5% after inflation. Unless ur 7% is before inflation.

also mcshwagger i dunno where u got that 10% figure from. The 5% is the average rate of return long term over 10+years

or he could just invest in an index fund which mirrors the set market it is tied to. Which would net around 10% on a good year, but the underlying securities could also shit the bed.

well the post said mutual fund so that's what I stuck to. Sure you could also invest in SPY or even SPXL the triple leveraged fund (though that doesnt make much difference in the long run) but around 10% is all you're gonna get from an ETF or mutual fund. Stocks are riskier. I've been in invested in Lockheed Martin since the beginning of my investing which was a little over a year ago and I'm up about 25% but thats exceptional.
