ALS = Lou Gehrigs Disease.

What it is: It's kind of like Parkinsons in the sense that the body deteriorates over time from neurological symptoms. It's quite deadly, as only about 1 in 3 patients survive longer than 3 years, usually from Pneumonia caused by the weakened immune system. Also leads to trouble breathing and speaking, very poor motor skills, and other symptoms associated with the nervous system. Stephen Hawking has the disease, for a bit of perspective, but he is a very rare exception of someone who survived with the disease over a long period of time.

About 30,000 Americans have the disease at any one point in time according to the ALSA.

Also ALS research has a bit of controversy, as it has historically used stem cells and animal testing as research. The ALS Association states though that this is done on nothing bigger than a rat.

Basically all you need to know about the disease and charity in a nutshell.
