I don't want to be that guy, and I'm not sure if this is bait, but that picture is completely stupid. IQ tests are subject to interpretation and have often been considered to be culturally biased. The people aren't dependent but rather have become dependent, they could survive without help.

Agreed. My best friend has traveled around Africa as part of doctors without borders. She says a lot of places expect handouts from first world countries because we freely give handouts. They see a white person and automatically assume we're rich and can give them money, because that is what other white people have done for them in the past. They've almost come to expect it. Kind of like, as a child, when that one wealthy relative of yours always gave you a lot of money in your birthday card every year, but one year you opened her card and became upset because there was less than you were expecting.

That's why it's better to purchase fair trade products instead of just donating money.

Honestly, lion fathers tend to be more accepting of kittens than most domestic cat fathers - or male cats in general. Or adult cats if they aren't the mother, really. Sometimes you get a sweetheart kitty who will take in newcomer kittens and act as a surrogate parent of sorts but it's less common than the typical "growl, hiss and slap" response. At least it's usually more a sign of insecurity than anything, and in my experience it's fairly rare to find one who will intentionally harm kittens.

Most of it has to do with unfamiliarity. One way to get an older cat to accept a new kitten is to take one of the older cat's blankets or favourite pillows that's full of its pheromones, and have the kitten sleep in/on it the night before you take it home. If the new kitten smells like the old cat, the older cat will probably accept it much more quickly.
#42 - Dember (07/25/2015) [-]
I usually introduce the new kitten into the house - either in a confined area such as a bathroom with a gate up, or in a large dog crate depending on the age and activity level. Feeding them right next to each other, but separated through the gate (especially tasty treats like canned food) helps them immediately be able to inspect on nothing but their own terms, and to associate the new arrival with something positive and tasty.

There's still some degree of anxious/defensive hissing and the occasional claw-free bop on the noggin once they're running loose together, but we've had great success so far.
I've taken in a few dozen rescues so I figured out some useful methods - I like your suggestion a lot though! Might try that if I get a particularly timid or hostile kitten who doesn't want to warm up as quickly, as sometimes happens. Thanks for the tip!

User avatar

Mostly the males!... Mostly.

From what I understand, that's generally only males who take over another pride that already had resident males and offspring, sadly. Makes the females come in heat again sooner so they can pass on their own genes instead... nature's fuckin heartless sometimes. : /

They're dang good fathers to their own cubs though. Or any cubs in their pride in general; I mean there can be two or three males in the pride all siring cubs and each will act as the father to all of them.

Likewise, the females treat all cubs indiscriminately, with no bias toward their own. Go figure.

User avatar
#37 - Dember (07/25/2015) [-]
Oh yeah, really common - especially if they were two or three bachelors (usually siblings or at least from the same pride themselves) who took over a new pride together.

Much unlike with other "pack animals" such as wolves, all the male lions will breed, too - whereas wolves consist of just one breeding pair and their offspring from past and present litters.
User avatar
#34 - cfeuer (07/25/2015) [-]
lionesses care for all cubs in their entire pride, be it theirs or of another females in the same pride. they all guard, clean, nurse and hunt for them. males do nothing but fight other males, and if they find cubs while a male is away, kills them. the females wont always fight off males of other prides.
User avatar
#36 - Dember (07/25/2015) [-]
true dat

It's kind of interestign that when male lions do hunt for themselves, they're a lot more likely to share with only the cubs than with the females who feed their layabout asses 99% of the time, lol.
