The word liberal used to describe the Civil Rights Movement. Now, they're still using the word to support the continuing trend of "civil rights" activism, which now includes social justice.

Think about it this way. Conservative means you want things to be unchanged, right? America's founding was one of the most liberated countries this side of anarchy, meaning for us being conservative means wanting it to be more like our roots. Being liberal, well, that's off. But "progressive" in the case of America means being less like our origins. Less freedoms, more censoring.

Our country is still young and at one point liberal and conservative only referred to fiscal matters for each respectively. Liberals for excessive spending for better infrastructure, education, and a smaller military as way of compensation. Conservatives for more cuts, a well balanced budget, larger military, lower taxes, etc. As our society developed over the years social liberties and other constructs became issues that both parties latched onto. The way I look at it now is conservativism holds onto the ways of old trying to keep us tethered to the roots of our forefathers. While liberalism wants to branch out and push further to be like the rest of the world. We have a two party system where the vast majority of the country votes either way as be sure their voice is being heard and these two parties have the highest chances of being elected to office. There are other political parties, but they each latch onto the larger two depending on where they fall in the political spectrum.(left or right, liberalism or conservativism).

tl;dr Government and politics suck.

Political Party Bullshit mostly.
At one point or another the views of the TWO political parties flip-flopped and thus our interpertation of "Liberal/Conservative" and "Left/Right" have probably swapped too.

However, It's mostly because Horseshoe theory is a bitch. Whenever anyone is that fanatical about their world view they usually seek to stamp out any and all ideas that there is an alternative.
Happens on literally every build-up to a Communist Society, and Americans still consider communism "Left"
User avatar #63 - Ruspanic (06/04/2015) [-]
Basically everyone considers Communism left-wing.

I think i read somewhere that the term liberal in america means something different than it would say in the UK, and that most people who believe in classical liberal views in America refer to themselves as Libertarians instead

To be fair, up until fairly recently, the last five years give or take, liberals didn't demand bans on things that rustled their hugbox. Like, zero things. Banning books was always a WASP/conservative thing. Like, trying to get Harry Potter books banned and such.
