I was cool with this comment up until "hopefully see your errors." I haven't made any. I get that hipsters are trying to be hip, but if they're interested in art then they need to do more than just call themselves artists. They need to study the techniques, the styles, the periods and all that jazz. The problem is that if you try to point this out, many of them become defensive and spout off about how nobody else in the world understands real art and all that nonsense. I'm not opposing modern art, because all that really means is that people are trying to develop new techniques and that is required for growth. I will never respect someone who calls himself an artist but couldn't tell impressionism from surrealism. The fakes who do things that clearly aren't skillful need to be told that they aren't good. As a pianist, I would be distraught if people let me believe that I was any better than I am. I also spend just as much time studying styles, techniques and periods as I do practicing. That's why I call myself a musician. People that can beat out 3 chords on a guitar and sing their favorite country songs are not musicians. They're just singing and there's nothing wrong with that. However, when they try to tell me that they're just as much a musician as I am, I draw the line. I've dedicated years of my life to studying music theory, music history and a slew of instruments. It is offensive for someone to slight all of that effort and consider themselves my peer because they can strum 3 chords and sing. I'm certainly not against people trying and failing, either. It's the people with no skill, no technique, no education and that have spent very little time on what they believe is art because of how they felt when they did it that bother me. Those people need to be told that they don't compare to the folks that actually put effort into their work. Some people are naturally gifted and very talented without all that research, they're fine too. Some things are clearly sub-par. My rule for art is pretty simple: if it looks like a kindergarten class project, try again.

As for doing your own thing, well if I go to some place to see some art, I wanna see some damn art. If it looks like a preschool art fair, then I'll feel as though my time has been wasted. Artists need to be open to criticism for a few reasons, but largely because not everyone has the same opinions. There will be people who hate a work, no matter how good it is, because of what is depicted. Likewise, there will be people who enjoy bad art. If someone is out there insisting that his arrangement of six red dots and 3 gray dots is a reflection of [insert typical hipster bullshit here], then calling his art bad is no different than calling a fat person fat. In real life, you don't get points for trying.

Some art is very clearly enjoyed only by people trying to appear sophisticated. People with no knowledge of techniques, styles, periods or anything about art in general feel like special snowflakes because they found out how to get other people to think they're worth something by insisting that folks who don't like it just "dont get it." That 'art' is worth puking over.

**stickmansam rolled image**you clearly don't understand the point of my comment. i am an artist myself and i too despise hipsters, but they don't hurt anybody. i really don't care if people take part in some fake art for the sake of seeming intelligent or different. they can do their own shit and i don't have to get involved for any reason. if some one enjoys something because they're snarky assholes they still enjoy it. so why would you stop people from enjoying themselves? you don't know anything about art yourself i assume so how can you say that they don't understand it if you don't understand it yourself. seriously the only reason someone would confront a hipster is because they feel threatened by them. i know because i feel threatened your confrontation with them is just as bad as what they are doing. dont think that im arguing from anger or from spite, but instead know that i just want this message to come across and for you to hopefully see your errors. i really only mean good. also mind my grammar, im pretty fucking bad at it.

There might be a recording somewhere, he'd have an English accent though and probably a well spoken one at that considering his background
