just think how much more efficient medieval warfare would have been if everything was camouflaged.
some people did wear primitive camo by dressing in dull greens and browns, but on a medieval battlefield you want to be visible. Battles were preplanned affairs a lot of the time, generals would agree to fight at a certain time and on what field. This was partially because it takes a long time for large numbers of people to move. A medieval army might have a twenty thousand people in it, many of them requiring help to put on their armor.
Ambushes were used, and in such cases, cloaks might be worn to stop light from reflecting off armor. They were usually just skirmishes though, because anything more than a couple dozen people will make a lot of noise just by living. Watch this video
, and imagine how loud a hundred people would be. Even just walking around in chainmail, you jingle. No one is gonna be sneaking in armor
it's definitely a trade off. To steal a line from Matt Easton, the only way you'll be perfectly safe is to lock yourself in a bank vault. If you want to be able to move, you have to give up some of that protection.
I feel that sallets are a good compromise in the vison department, you can see in front of you and, up to a certain point, to the sides. Raising your visor makes your field of vison way better, but you can be stabbed in the face a lot easier. Either configuration looks good too, which is a major factor in LARP armor. If you want to fight in SCA or something like it, you have to fight visor down. It's not historical, but some times you have to give up some historical accuracy for safety. This burgonet is made for SCA, most burgonets didn't have large faceplates.
Worse helmet for visibility is definitely the great helm or a houndskull. The eyeholes are set far away from the eye, so that even if an arrow hits the hole, it won't go right into your eye. You end up having to move your head constantly to make up for the tiny field of vision. If you have a whole group of guys in them, it's pretty entertaining to see, because they look like a flock of chickens.
