Dude, listen to Archspire. They're fucking sick.
User avatar #14 - sovereignsunkown (11/16/2012) [-]
i grew up with those guys.
they're pretty cool, but too atonal and monotonous for me.
i'd prefer to listen to a band like Obscura, Cynic or Augury with a more melodic/progressive edge.
User avatar #15 - timbittwo (11/16/2012) [-]
Wait, what do you mean you grew up with them? Do you actually know them personally?
User avatar #16 - sovereignsunkown (11/17/2012) [-]
i knew them personally, i went to elementary school/junior high with them in vancouver.
pretty cool guys, their bassist used to date my friend's older sister

There are two ends to every genre. If you listen to some of their music, it is very thrash influenced. A band can be in the same genre, but it doesn't mean they sound a thing alike. Example:
Cowboys From Hell by Pantera
Walk With Me In Hell by Lamb of God

Both are groove metal, they don't sound alike. Reeducate yourself, you sound like a jackass who refuses to accept any other genre of music. en.wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Scream_Aim_Fire

thrash is characterized by double bass drumming, tremolo picking on the open E, chromatic/pentatonic leads, Standard or Eb Standard tuning and shouted, punky vocals. bullet for my valentine are a metalcore band, as they have very few of these elements, and when they are present, they're not used in a thrash-like manner. bullet for my valentine have simplistic minor harmonic leads, a single note breakdown, alternating between semi-melodic vocals and screaming, and trad-metal influenced riffing. if any thrash elements are present, they're used only sparingly, not enough to justify associating with the genre. you don't seem to know your shit very well.

Take into consideration, nu metal fucking sucks, but it still has elements of metal. Metalcore is hardcore punk(and other hardcore punk subgenres) and thrash(and other extreme metal genres) all mashed into one. It's more of a punk version of thrash, but not to the point of crossover thrash. The vocals are pretty fruity, but the instrumentals are good(besides the shit bands that only do breakdowns.) Also, just so you know, Bullet For My Valentine is heavy metal, thrash metal, and metalcore. They're mainly heavy metal and thrash. Don't think I'm some fanboy of metalcore, I rarely will listen to any of it.

you don't really understand the significance of the genre label "core". genres such as metalCORE and deathCORE take elements of metal, and combine them with pop elements to make a streamlined, easy-selling sound for people who want heavy music that still sounds "poppy". it's not metal at all, it's a bastardization of it for profit. hence, many metal fans and musicians get very, very offended when it's referred to as "metal". it's not a very well-known fact outside of modern metal circles, so most people don't quite understand, yourself included, so it would seem

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are those bands not younger and play a newer style of metal than the heavy metal bands of the 70s and 80s?
User avatar #19 - sovereignsunkown (07/16/2012) [-]
none of those bands can be considered metal. they're really just pop bands that discovered drop D tuning and are somewhat heavier than other pop. modern metal is bands like Augury, Gorod, Skeletonwitch, Obscura, Vektor, Havok, ect; with genres like progressive death metal, folk metal, technical death metal, melodic death metal, various forms of black metal, ect.

Actually i listen to both Metal (almost every sub-genre of metal) and electronic (particularly Electro House and Dubstep) and electronic music does require about as much dedication as metal. I've downloaded a music program that i've had for months/half a year and still can't make a good song for shit, it actually is quite complicated.
#132 - anonymous (07/14/2012) [-]
Half a year? In half a year you wouldn't even be able to play guitar, and would not even dream about composing ANYTHING.
User avatar #100 - sovereignsunkown (07/14/2012) [-]
it all boils down to ear, i find. on a challenge from a friend i sat down and composed a techno song on FL studio over a few days, and it turned out sounding just like most professional techno i've heard. it was actually harder to arrange than compose. that being said, on my guitar, i've spent 6-8 hours a day for 3 years practicing and still aren't capable of composing the music i want. i see that kind of software as a shortcut for people who don't have the time to learn an instrument or the patience to work with other people.

not been to sleep yet all night its no 1:47pm and cant be bothered reading the novels you're typing to defend all the different genres and groups in "metal" you're missing the part where I said "why don't we all listen to music we like and get on with life" just accept people like different things and you're just stereotyping bands like aa only values money and being trendy but im pretty sure if you were in a famous band you wouldn't be like ohhhh dude gotta push the boundaries, the way I see it is if the music sounds good and people like it (not everyone) then why care?

that's what i'm saying though. i'm not saying one is wrong and no one should listen to it, i'm saying it shouldn't be grouped with metal, because they're only similar to people who are uneducated in metal's history. people can listen t whatever they want, but they shouldn't try to group it with something it's not.

at no point did I say I listen to asking or bands like that I prefer older stuff but the fact is that it is the exact same thing. metalheads seam to think they are alpha over all music and everyone has to agree with their opinions
User avatar #49 - sovereignsunkown (07/04/2012) [-]
its not the same thing though. there's a very big difference in the culture and ideals in the different groups. "real" metal, like Obscura, Angel Witch, Death, ect. has this idea of artistic integrity, staying true to your influences, and always pushing boundaries and limits. bands like AA value money, being "trendy" and being pseudo-emotional because they know it will sell. it's not about the music, it's about the money. do you think Death wrote songs like Spiritual Healing or Altering the future to make money? no, they wrote it to criticize systems that they believed were wrong. nobody has to agree with what i like, and because i like metal doesn't make my likes "better", just different. i don't like being associated with a group of people that are the opposite of what i believe because our music sounds "similar" in minor ways
