Fedoras have become a symbol of the pompous, as you called them "betas" who complain too much about their circumstances. Specifically they're used to symbolize "class" in their minds, the wearers often make condescending remarks about society, how women are foolish sluts, and why "douche bags" are failures.

In short, they've become a symbol of arrogant pricks who'd rather complain about others than change their situation.

Indeed, as in their time they were stylish and practical for business. A fedora, or a similar hat, was a symbol of business, much like a tie today. They're not really affiliated with any particular attire anymore...well except the fedora'd gentleman I suppose.
