I cant remember, but they just either passed the new "cross branch uniform" or they canceled it.
On one hand I can kinda agree with it, because it will instill more attention to detail, and it will save sooooo much money that could be used to upgrade outdated equipment for older units. And besides, im tired of the U.S Army ACU, they just suck, and they get people killed downrange. Id rather have the BDU's back with the black boots.
But were also getting the Scorpion II next year, so im kinda psyched for that.
On the other hand, all this time and money spent on deciding a new uniform every 2 years is pointless.
Just find one and stick with it until the situation dictates otherwise.

User avatar #14 - soldieroffortunemp (12/18/2014) [-]
I agree, when I came home from Afghanistan and had to switch to my ACUs again it sucked, I prefer my mulitcams. They should have just gone with the multicams and left it at that since they burn all the gear you have to turn in when you come home.

Its pretty stupid if you ask me.

They only did it to try and look better than the Marine Corp pattern. They failed hard, I want the marine uniform. That shit is slick.

maybe a little thicker, but much more comfortable.

User avatar #52 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
I know this is a real dumb question, but is there anything that doesn't move around a whole bunch/stays stateside? Any military occupation/branch?
User avatar #53 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Hmm.
You might want to look into the Air/Army national guard/reserves or Marine/Navy reserves.
with the guard you stay at home, and only drill 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year for annual training.
Im currently in the Army national guard for the time being and honestly I was like you when i joined, but then when I went through training i realized the mistake I made and wanted to transfer Active duty and now its a pain in the ass.
Im currently a medic and i love my job, I love the feeling of knowing im the difference between the life or death of my brothers and sisters. I personally volunteer for every auxiliary mission they give us because I love being part of it.
What are you interested in doing?
What state are you in if you dont mind me asking?
User avatar #75 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
Guard sounds good, I really liked the idea of search and rescue during natural disasters.
User avatar #57 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
Sorry, Florida, and pretty much anything, I'd prefer medical but I'm a pretty easily amused man.
User avatar #60 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
There are a whole list of medical positions.
lab tech, dential assistant, x-ray tech, nursing, or something like me in the combat medic where you actually go out with the infantry men and fuck shit up.
granted you technically arent allowed to hurt other people due to the Geneva convention but the loophole is that you are always allowed to defend yourself in a firefight.
And if we ever get into an actual conventional war with another country that follows the convention guidelines on warfare you are an immune target, meaning they arent allowed to engage you.
bottom line, I would reccomend the 68W combat medic, you learn a lot of cool shit that you can bring back home to work with as well.
User avatar #64 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
I'm guessing combat medic is only active duty not reserves right?
User avatar #68 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
nope, im in the Guard for now, and thats where i started.
Everyone needs medics.
Im pretty sure every state has a medical command stationed there to over see the health of the entire states standing force.
User avatar #70 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
So, are reserves and national guard the same or is national guard full time but stateside? Forgive my ignorance, I don't mean any disrespect.
User avatar #72 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
its pretty much the same, just different scopes, reserves act as a relief force for Active duty forces, while guard are separate functions.
The guard will be deployed for state disasters, and sometimes even national disasters depending on severity and your job.
The reserves really dont do anything like that.
The guard is funded by the state and is charged with tasks by the governor in the event of disaster.
User avatar #63 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Or you could go the OCS route, go to college and become an officer and be a medical provider for a unit.
meaning you are the one in charge of everything that goes on in the aid station.
You make the call on all medical treatment for every patient.
personally ill never be an officer, I hate the concept.
I would rather be in the enlisted ranks, you get so much more respect as an NCO than an officer because you're the one out there with your soldiers.
User avatar #69 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
They'd want me to have some sort of Medical degree though yeah? Not just like political science or economics or something right?
User avatar #87 - agreatusername (12/19/2014) [-]
As I said, Guard is only 1 weekend a month, and a two week training period a year.
The rest of the time is all you, meaning you can still have a job/ career or school.
It makes it a lot easier to do it.
However it is possible to get a full time position in the guard, but it sucks because you have to fill out applications and compete with other people to get it.
User avatar #88 - softcover (12/19/2014) [-]
Okay, thank you so much kind medic!
User avatar #85 - agreatusername (12/19/2014) [-]
The combat medic process will train you to a near paramedic level, maybe a high advanced EMT however you will only be licensed for basic EMT. You would have to take it upon yourself to go to paramedic school, however your GI bill will help pay for that school.
User avatar #86 - softcover (12/19/2014) [-]
Is guard full time or part time? Can I not get it while working in guard?
User avatar #83 - agreatusername (12/19/2014) [-]
Thats more of a state emergency service function, like the Fire department, or EMT/paramedic service. Which you will get your EMT license as a combat medic in the Army.
User avatar #84 - softcover (12/19/2014) [-]
So that would let me be a Paramedic after I put in my years?
User avatar #79 - agreatusername (12/19/2014) [-]
Slim to none.
The chances of being in the same unit are small, but if it does happen the chances of injury are small too.
EOD has two states of life, either dead, or alive.
Theres hardly any inbetween with EOD
User avatar #81 - softcover (12/19/2014) [-]
Alright, good to know, thank you. One other thing, is there any sort of search and rescue for National guard or is that just a local government type thing?
User avatar #77 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
No problem, if you ever need anything else just shoot me a line.
Ill answer as much as I can.
User avatar #78 - softcover (12/19/2014) [-]
One last question, I've a friend whose going EOD, what are the chances that I'll get to glue his butt back on afterwards?
User avatar #74 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Go medical honestly, its one of the most useful skills in the world, and its actually a lot of fun after the studying.
You see a lot of cool shit, and you learn a lot of cool shit.
User avatar #76 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
Thank you so much, you've been a great help man, really.
User avatar #71 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
You would need a minimum 2 year degree in a medical school to qualify, then you start as a 2nd lieutenant after you graduate OCS, until then you're a cadet, and we usually just call you DOTS. You have no authority over anyone at all. yeah, we respect you and listen to you because we have to, but thats about it.
User avatar #73 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
What would you recommend for someone like me who hasn't chosen a major yet and is about to get their AA and start major courses next semester?
User avatar #55 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
Florida
User avatar #58 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
hmm, I cant personally help you, but I can give you advice.
User avatar #62 - softcover (12/18/2014) [-]
Okay, thanks for this so far too.

Well, My grandfather was navy and my dad was going to go navy but my grandfather told him to stick it out through college first, which is what my dad told me, and I'm half way through now. I talked to a few navy recruiters and they told me just do active duty, one actually bothered to talk to me about reserves which I thought I might, I didn't take my asvab yet but on the practice I took with him I got a 95.
User avatar #38 - Durn (12/18/2014) [-]
yeo, real quick question, is it worth finishing high school for the diploma, or getting your ged?
User avatar #41 - soldieroffortunemp (12/18/2014) [-]
They don't even let people in with a GED anymore. If you have a GED you need at least an associates degree to get in.
User avatar #49 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Not true, I got in with a GED just fine.
It depends on what time of the year you try.
October-December is the best because the fiscal year rolls over and new slots open up.
User avatar #116 - soldieroffortunemp (12/20/2014) [-]
How long ago?
User avatar #40 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Finish highschool.
It lets you start out at a higher rank when you enlist.
If you have some college experience you can start as E-4 then all you need to do is wait 2 years before you make your SGT
User avatar #43 - Durn (12/18/2014) [-]
damn, i'm 17 and the only requirement that i'm missing is literally that (i guess apart from parental consent for being 17). im just tired of learning about ocean currents and polynomials i guess. and does having a high score on the ASVAB help you get the position you want?

soldieroffortunemp
User avatar #48 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Yes, the score is basedon a percentile of general knowledge in different catagories.
mechanical, arithmetic, science, language, etc etc.
I got an 84 on mine, and I got my medical slot easily. It also depends on the slots your recruiter is trying to fill as well, if they dont have the job you want, try another recruiter.
Even try a different branch.
User avatar #50 - Durn (12/18/2014) [-]
yeah i heard about that sometimes recruiters aren't the most honest people, they have to fill quotas or something like that. the mos i'm looking towards is 11x option 40, and i got a 90 on my ASVAB.
User avatar #51 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
Talk to your recruiter and see what he/she can do.
If you have your heart set on it dont take no for an answer, they may be intimidating and try and give you other options or guilt you for wasting their time, but remember that they need you more than you need them. If they dont give it to you try another recruiter in the state.
User avatar #80 - Durn (12/19/2014) [-]
cant reply to your comment, no idea why.

ill probably be deploying in 2-3 years, do you think any major military engagement will occur? ISIS imo seems to be the biggest threat.
User avatar #82 - agreatusername (12/19/2014) [-]
Theres no telling when you will be deploying.
So dont count on it, I read an article about the first ground engagement on goat fucker forces, so its possible we might put more boots on the ground to wipe them out, but who knows.
User avatar #59 - Durn (12/18/2014) [-]
thats what i planned on doing, glad to have reassurance on that too. ive read enough recruiter horror stories about being assigned the most boring jobs and i don't really want that haha
User avatar #67 - agreatusername (12/18/2014) [-]
My recruiter was actually a medic as well and told me to go for it, he was in the initial desert storm when we put boots on the ground and had a great time.
then he went to kuwait which is basicaly a playground right now.
easiest deployment youll ever have.
User avatar #44 - soldieroffortunemp (12/18/2014) [-]
Yes the higher score you get the better your job choices are. I agree, I was taking bull shit classes when i was finishing high school because I only needed one. I
User avatar #47 - Durn (12/18/2014) [-]
good looks, i took my ASVAB about a week ago (in school) and when i got my results back i got a 90 on the AFQT and they said i'm a category 2. will that help me get 11x option 40?
User avatar #117 - soldieroffortunemp (12/20/2014) [-]

The reserves really dont do anything like that.
The guard is funded by the state and is charged with tasks by the governor in the event of disaster.

If you want to waste your life in the infantry go for it. I would pick a different field but that is me.

Hey, bro, I went into the Army recruiter today and they wanted a reference, so I gave them your name. They had your address and phone number because you recruited through them, but they still need references for my secret clearance. Do you mind if I use you again for that purpose?

We has rules.
Iamkagji, Superjman, and I are moderators, which means we have access to the third party account that hosts the thing, but so far as executive decisions go such as removing someone from the board a vote is taken up that, if unanimous, decides the issue and, if not, is finalized by us. All that stupid crap is a safeguard against assholes of the type we've all encountered in the past.
The real point of it is just to have an environment that is conducive to friendly conversation and interaction with people of like-minded interests.

But, you know, if you violate any of the rules I can just go two miles south and punch you in the face. =D

User avatar #555 to #554 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]
Yeah, not very likely. I only piss people off in person, and even that is a rare occasion.
#556 to #555 - dashgamer (06/05/2013) [-]
Pissing people off inadvertently is something I've always been good at.
User avatar #557 to #556 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]

One Marine told me, "I want to punch you in the face. You've just got one of those faces that... makes me want to hit it."
I don't know how, but making folks antipathetic is my special talent.
User avatar #559 to #558 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]
Ah, so it's one of those "Just my breathing pisses people off" kinda things. Well, I guess I'm weird cause you haven't pissed me off.
User avatar #560 to #559 - dashgamer (06/05/2013) [-]
Yeah, I guess. I would say it's why I don't go out much, but actually I resent people just for breathing, too.
User avatar #561 to #560 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]
lol well, I guess you might just have to deal with getting punched when you go out. being anti social is no bueno.
#562 to #561 - dashgamer (06/05/2013) [-]
Aside from the other day, I haven't talked to anyone in any way that wasn't obligatory for more than a year.
User avatar #565 to #564 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]
Boy... I ought to take you out to the woodshed and beat you like a redheaded stepchild.
#566 to #565 - dashgamer (06/05/2013) [-]

User avatar #567 to #566 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]
That's why you go to FoCo or somethin'.
#568 to #567 - dashgamer (06/05/2013) [-]
Is there any way to get there that isn't a highway?
User avatar #569 to #568 - sonicg (06/05/2013) [-]
Cross-Country? lol County roads I guess. That or you just find somebody who has a car and be like "Hey, if I give you a couple bucks for gas, you wanna go to (insert locale here) with me?"
#570 to #569 - dashgamer (06/05/2013) [-]
When I get a bike that doesn't break after being ridden for twenty minutes, I'll make my way over there to explore.
