It's only slightly wider, but the bullet and the casing are much longer, more mass, more velocity, and a nice narrow diameter make it good for penetrating, pretty bad for expanding though. It's a military round, for use against military targets who often have some kind of armor.

Well, the actual bullet is pretty similar in size, but the casing is bigger.

Is it possible you thought it was a .22 lr because you heard them saying it was a long gun on the news, or did some sources say it was a .22?

well the station that my mom had it glued on kept saying he had an arsenal, then an ar, a handgun, and a long rifle. so after a while i stopped listening to it and for the few bits i was paying attention to was that part so it was just me not listining. but they did say an ar15 Lr. it was channel 9.
#14 - SuperSixONE (06/13/2016) [-]
Ah, that was probably the guy at the California gay pride parade that they stopped before he could do anything. They used the word "arsenal" for that a lot. AR-15 is a long gun, a long rifle to be specific, but not necessarily .22.
Oh, and channel 9 for you probably isn't channel 9 for me.

Case hardening is a pain in the ass, don't bother with it. Or pay someone else to do it.

Not necesarily. Case hardening is when you introduce your piece to a high carbon atmosphere, wether it be in the form of pack carburising in a sealed container covered with carbon dust depth of penetration is controlled by time spent in the furnace , or cyaniding one of the faster methods, however the cyanide salts used are poisonous as fuck, and it only provides a very thin shell or case or a number of other methods. There is a kindof pseudo case hardening where they only harden the contact or wear areas through heating and quenching, but that is almost exclusively used for sprockets and gears, and is more of a tempering process rather than a carburising one.
