Or... or... y'know... there's more than enough blank unusused desert area which can be repurposed for solar panels. Also, super duper long AC cables can do the trick

ok now find enough resources and people to make install and maintain. then take away the privately owned land including that owned by natives and you may have enough to power a small town.

if a high end solar panel produces roughly 1 kwh (1 killowatt hour) every three hours, the city of los angeles consumed roughly 70 trillion kwh in 2014 then we would need to make 70 trillion solar panels these solar panels are 61"x41" or roughly 208 square feet.

now lets be generous and say these panels are drawing power for 18 hours a day on average for the entire year. that means every day a single panel creates 6 kwh. so we wont need as many panels. a single panel will produce roughly 6570 kwh in a year with 18 average days of sunlight under ideal conditions. that drops the number of needed solar panels to produce enough power to run the city of los angeles to 10,654,490,106. im going to pair that down to 10.6 billion solar panels.

so again to power the city of los angeles we would need two trillion two hundred four billion eight hundred million. square feet of land or to pair it down from what google kicked out 2.2 trillion square feet. the total area of the US is 103.6 trillion square feet. so we have the room. however the state of arizona only has roughly 27 million square feet.

this is to power one city. admittedly one of the largest cities in the country. so the TLDR of this is that the entire state of arizona under optimal conditions could not power the city of LA with solar power alone if the entire state was solar panels.
