Well, I would say that it's meaning is not universal, so it's pointless to try and impose your own meaning onto it when the people using it mean different things anyway.

It would take a long time for me to provide a meaningfully complete argument, and it's not like I keep these things typed out and ready to go. Besides, it sounds like you're suggesting that we should ban it outright. That's the very definition of censorship.
User avatar #40 - sixty (06/27/2015) [-]
Then you have no argument. If you don't have an actual rebuttal then your idea isn't worth dick.

I don't want to ban it outright. I want to ban it where it's not needed. Like, say, Governments.

If some Mississippian somewhere wants to fly it, they can do so, and I won't give a shit. I would disagree with them wholeheartedly, but I'm not going to take it down from them. (If I want a picture of a huge cock on the front of my door, and I own the place I'm allowed to do so)

They should keep the flag in museums, where they will tell of the times of the civil war and things of that matter.

It shouldn't be used in the governments of today. There's just no need. (Because they lost) (And their country of slave owners doesn't exist anymore, and will hopefully never exist again)
#41 - wraithguard (06/27/2015) [-]
Your arguments here rely on the assertion that the flag is explicitly a symbol of racism, which is not a universal belief. Also, I'd like to point out that you shouldn't tell me that my "idea isn't worth dick" when you yourself have not provided a meaningful argument for why is IS explicitly racist.

I'm glad you brought up the swastika. A symbol representing something else, taken and used by other groups, and is now a symbol of hate. Sound familiar? The Swastika is a religious symbol of 3 peaceful religions. Does it make the Swastika a hate symbol? No, that's just what you believe. I'm sure there are plenty of swastikas in India, Thailand, Japan, and Singapore, and are viewed as a peaceful symbol of religion.
User avatar #48 - yzerboy (06/27/2015) [-]
So you're saying that widespread use can change the definition of a symbol, but it can't happen to the confederate flag? Comparing it to a swastika is dumb, there still are people who have witnessed the swastika being used by the Nazis, but I doubt there is anyone who has been alive long enough to have lived through America's Civil War.

You really believe that it supports slavery?
Something non existent in first world countries.
Nothing about history of the confederate states
#65 - millennial (06/27/2015) [-]
The Confederate flag was a symbol for the Confederate States of America, a combination of states that left the Union (The United States of America) in favor of a self-governing, state based, less federal government.

Many states in the Confederacy had slaves, nobody argues that. A few in the Union did as well, but not nearly on the scale of the Confederacy.
Only rich, successful men owned slaves, less than 10% Could be wrong on this percentage, seeing as how it's just a number I remember being said during my American History and World History college courses so take it with a grain of salt of the Confederacy population owned slaves.
Majority of the soldiers in the Confederate Army were poor, low born men and slaves who fought for State's Rights, not slavery. They were fighting for the right to govern themselves, much how the founding fathers fought Europe for the same right.

The Confederate flag is a symbol of those men and women who wanted the rights that our nation were founded upon. Even Lincoln understood this, and as such his plan for Reconstruction was to be lenient towards the south and help them heal.
Your argument of "the flag supports slavery" is only half correct, and the other half you're missing makes you seem ignorant to American History. As a whole, that flag was a symbol of Statehood and small Federal Government.

While I agree with you saying "You have the right to say what you want, but you also have the right to face the consequences of your actions", you're also ignoring the fact that those who wish to support that flag are being censored by those who support the LGBT flag.

In short, it's heritage. People are proud of where they come from and want the right to be proud of where they come from without people like you, those uninformed, saying that one of their cultural icons stood for nothing else other than the right to own slaves when that's not even 20% of the reason.
The truth of the matter is this: The South was being oppressed, regulated, and taxed to death. They got tired of it and rebelled. Their descendants still hold dearly the virtues their ancestors fought for.

The Flag itself is nothing more than a symbol of the Confederacy and the values that nation, albeit for a short time, was founded upon.

Much like the Swastika, the Confederate flag's true ideals and meanings have been lost to time due to the people abusing misinformed history and thus inflicting ignorance towards others and violating the once true ideal.

TL;DR
Confederate flag=Okay
Some people behind Confederate Flag= Corrupting old ideals.

Source: I'm an American History Major and have written countless papers about the Civil War and hate it when people never tell the full story because they don't take the time to learn the full story.

Or you know standing up against an abusive government, and the fact that the flag does not stand for slavery. The fact is it is not that different from the U.S. flag, the 13 stars represented the 13 states of the confederacy. I can also, see that you buy the whole "South racist and waged war for SLAVERY hur dur racist" No, it was all about taxation without representation. Slavery and racism was not even issue til towards the end of the war.

In the early years, Lincoln didn't give a shit about slavery and he actuallu signed laws that made it worse for escaped slaves

slavery may have been the trigger but the war itself was about states' rights

Lincoln freed slaves ONLY IN SOUTHERN STATES! He only freed the slaves because by the end of the war he had to power to do so. If the confederacy surrendered earlier, when they had more leverage, they wouldn't have gotten rid of slavery.
#44 - anon (06/27/2015) [-]

I'm proud of my wood working and seeing what I've made and my guitar play and the time I spent learning how to get to the level of playing i'm at today. I'm proud of what I consider my biggest accomplishment in life so far I"m the first person in my family to ever graduate high school. I'm proud as fuck about that.

I will how ever never be proud because I like dudes instead of chicks. It's the dumbest shit I've ever heard of in my whole damn life.

Should people be proud to be left handed because they are a minority?? No because that is dumb as shit. Should a black person be proud because they are black?? Should a Mexican be proud to have been born in mexico??

None of those things are pride worthy achievements. It's the fucking way they are born. It's not a choice they made. Its not something they worked hard for to achieve. They are fucking stuck with it from birth and can't really do anything about it.

Being gay is not an achievement no one should be proud to be gay.

You know bud, that sounds an awful lot like SJW logic there, let's all just be proud to be ourselves regardless of orientation, race, age, gender, etc. You do you and be around of it, and I'll do the same.
