True depending on the store, but my guess is that this was a customer stopping a crime, so they won't be fired or anything.
But, an interesting fact is that with places like Best Buy, all they can do is grab your arm gently, and if you resist they have to let you go. Regardless if you're just carrying stuff out right in front of them very plainly.

It's them stopping a crime and putting somebody under citizen arrest. We also don't know if there were words exchanged, so he might have confronted him about slipping it into the bag and all and the guy could have told him to fuck off or something. Who knows. When you only have one way of seeing the event, it makes it hard to fully assess the situation.

A.) It's legally not considered stealing until he leaves / attempts to leave the store with it. He has not yet committed any crime.
B.) Even if he *had* already committed a crime, suckerpunching somebody in the face hard enough to knock them out is *not* how you perform a legal citizens arrest, especially for a small misdemeanor like shoplifting. That would definitely be considered excessive force.
C.) This took place in portugal. In Portugal, citizens' arrests are ONLY legal if the crime being committed is definitively punishable by jail time--of which petty theft is not.

The only difference in this case, is if this store was not any kind of franchise or larger retail chain, it is the owner of the store's choice as to the policies regarding Loss Prevention. Along with the laws of wherever they are, in my county, it is considered theft if the tags between two items are swapped and then attempted to be purchased. Local laws plus the policies of the store itself are the determinants of whether this is battery or just defense of property.
