No. I'll explain.

You see, every console they sell, they get part of the money as profit (deducting the cost of making the system + paying the distributors). So, if they aren't selling consoles, they aren't getting that profit, obviously. Furthermore, every game for the XBOX1 that is sold, part of that money goes to the console manufacturer, which is between 15% to 20%. That is why sometimes manufacturers even sell the console at a loss, because they can still make money just selling the games.

So, what you are going to say is, "Oh yeah, but now they are selling the games for PC, so that money is still comming in, and they are opening the market to everyone that has a PC, so thats great, so much money".

Well no. There are 2 problems with that theory. For them to get that slice of money, it needs to be sold by them, the Windows Storefront. How many people do you know that buy games on the Windows Store? I'm willing to bet that number isn't high.

People buy PC games from Steam, and not much else. And a fucking huge chunk of people don't even buy them because they pirate the games. Microsoft has no control over multiplatform games, and they are all selling on Steam all the time. The only games they have a hand in are games they publish themselves, such as Halo, Gears, Forza, etc.

Thats the reason EA made their own store, Origin. They wanted to get the money they pay to steam for themselves.

The only way Microsoft can entice people to use their storefront to buy games on their platform is either having a good selection of games that can only be sold there (which they don't have at the moment, its not really a big selection, even if you like the few exclusives), OR make prices really competitive, and good luck with that, competing with Steam's Prices.

So no. They might make it in the long run, but the future is grim for the next few years. They might make it if they get a few more exclusives, but as it stands, no.

TL;DR: If Microsoft is going to focus on PC, people will buy games from Steam and Microsoft wont get money from them. Furthermore, XBOX1 sales will drop even more.

You do realize that there are different teams on Microsoft? I didn't say they would be bankrupt if the fucking XBOX1 failed. They can be "fucked" as in, "having a net loss in profit this next few months/years" and still stay afloat as a company, because Microsoft is a lot more than just a gaming company. But having Windows doesnt mean that they aren't losing money on the gaming department.

Microsoft has plenty to do with PC gaming. Even if they are separate teams, why would it matter if the Xbox doesn't do as well as its counterparts?

If it's a net gain for Microsoft, then it's a net gain for Microsoft. If people leave the Xbone for PC, Microsoft still wins.
