That's just plain stupid. In Belgium if I get hit by a car courts would indeed usually rule in favour of the cyclist. And the same goes for a cyclist versus pedestrian, cyclist would be the one in fault.

Doesn't matter fuck none if that lands me in the hospital or the grave, and people here know it. I find the entire idea that some people have towards 'it's alright if I get hit, I'll be in the right' so bafflingly idiotic. Most kids in Belgium are raised with the attitude to drive safely, as cars are far more plentiful than bikes here. At least, that's for schools. Where I went in secondary school (age twelve-eighteen) there was a small lane. Cyclists formed up on a single line, but if your school is joined with a primary school (age six to twelve) where every god damn kid is brought to school by a mother driving a 4x4 while lacking the ability to drive something that big, and being on their phone, doing their nails (and I wish I was joking, Elias landed in the hospital cause a fucker drove off the road and rammed him into a tree, then had the nerve to blame him for it. Luckily enough there were cops not too far guiding traffic and they kept us from lynching her in pure anger).

We had to do an in depth study, in cooperation with the city hall to solve the issue. Ended up making patrolled car parks and strictly enforcing the one way streets for cars (cause 99.9% of the bikes either went to or from school depending on the hour). And speed cameras were enforced.

Cars and bikes should be able to coexist peacefully. You're near a school? Keep in mind, lots of kids on bikes, don't do twice the legal speed with a frigging jeep you don't know the size of. Drive through a city, lots of cars and distractions, don't run red lights, don't knock pedestrians of their socks, be polite.

Sadly enough that seems a lot harder to do than it ought to be.

Most bicycle accidents here are because of drunk drivers, speeding drivers, or kids not being familiar with dead angles on trucks.

If you get them as a puppy and train them properly they will not bark at someone coming to your door.
