It's the process for making mochi.
Mochi is made from a type of rice, that is cooked and pounded into chewy deliciousness. Most mochi sold in stores now days isn't the pounded kind.
Mochi pounding are also done for ceremonious occasions. I had to participate in mochi poundings all the time as a kid.

On a side note, we had an old concrete mochi bowl in our backyard, that we used to throw firecrackers in. It had a lid, so we would light it and cover it quickly, and then watch the lid blow off. We used to do a lot of dumb shit like that.

That's what I do as well. The Grands pretty much raised me and they're both in their mid 80s now so it's getting close to that time and I'm trying to make things count as much as I can.
