Breack action revolvers technically aren't, because the pressure and recoil at the hinge and lock eventually result in damage causing the lock to fail or function poorly. Modern ones may have gotten around this problem, but I'm far from an expert on these
The reason they aren't used very often anymore is that modern ammunition is more powerful and can pose a safety risk, also the toggle that opens them is more easy to open accidentally especially if the revolver is carried in a pocket, the last thing you want when you have to draw and fire quickly is for the revolver to be open and unfireable.
the appeal of revolvers is their extreme reliability. they are simple and its pretty hard to fuck up with one. break action doesnt affect performance unless the casings get stuck.
I believe they are pretty practical
my gunsmith uses webley revolvers for home defense, and they are break open.
seems like a quick way to reload if you know what you are doing, and its simple.
They are faster to reload then other revolvers of the time and could handle the calibers of the time. As cartridges became more powerful it was discovered that the top break design of old was weaker then solid top designs. Swing out cylinders offered just as fast reloading but with a stronger solid top design.
russian made a top break 357 magnum revolver but they never really caught on to the global market
. Now top breaks are mostly collector pieces. Though i know of a few fellows that carry webelys in .455 webely and are not undergunned at all.
Arguably a weaker design, but I think they look pretty cool.
Love the reload animation for the break action revolver in Far Cry 4 (around 1:15)
they´re not so tactical.
