If you like Steinbecks style, you should try to read some William Faulkner too. Absalom, Absalom! is beautiful, and The Sound and The Fury is really good.

Flannery O'Connor writes short stories, but they are totally life-evoking.

Stoner by John Williams, just look a few posts down!
It's not that long, but it's really the perfect novel. Just read it mmmkay.

Faulkner and John Williams added to my to-read list.
Short stories aren't really my thing.
Thank you very much for your suggestions!

"I'd like some books that make you think about life, much like some of Steinbeck's do."

I assume you know G. Orwell's books? If not, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are a must-read.

Ernest Miller Hemingway - pretty much everything he wrote, I especially like For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the sea and Across the River and Into the Trees.

Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt - Oscar and the Lady in Pink. It's sad as fuck tho.

A. Kaminski - Stones on the Barricade. "Published by the Polish underground press during the World War II occupation of Poland, the book describes the acts of sabotage and armed resistance carried out by the Polish underground scout movement, the Gray Ranks, of whom Kamiński was one of the instructors and leaders." It sounds a bit boring, but it's really not. In the beginning it feels like a adventure-kids-book before it hits you in the face with the whole brutality of war.

Z. Nalkowska - Medallions. It's really short and it's really... traumatizing. Each chapter is a different short story. Each story is an actual memory from the concentration camps. I really do not recommend if you're sensitive to this kind of shit.

Sorry if my recommendations seem a little... beginner-level I guess? If you already know these authors - let me know, I'll try to come up with something more "advanced"

Thanks for the reply.
Some of those names are familiar to me. I've been wanting to read Animal Farm for a long time because of the correlation some say there is between that book and Pink Floyd's album Animals (my favorite album).
My problem is, I'm only reading books from my dad's collection (300 or so books), which means I'm pretty limited (I will eventually start buying books or borrowing them from the library, but not yet). Though I know my dad owns some Hemingway and Kaminski books, which is pretty cool. So I'll start with those.

I know some of these authors but I haven't read a single book by one of them. So yeah, I'm a beginner.
Thanks again for the reply!

Have you read East of Eden? One of may favorites, but pretty long. 600 pages if I'm not mistaken.
User avatar #6571 - senseii (05/06/2015) [-]
I did read it. Loved every page. My favorite book, which isn't saying much considering I've only read Steinbeck.
#68 - saw that band live. best concert of my life. 05/01/2015 on your a good boy! i promise! 0
