now, there are some decent DMPCs, people who are there only as quest givers
As a dungeon master, I would feel stifled if I went into a game with this restriction, not because I'd intended to build a supplementary PC or companion, but rather should the story required this of me I would not be able to do so unless they act only as quest giver. Once again, I feel you're being a bit unfair, dndxplain. I would like to argue that a successful supplementary PC could assist the party in many more ways than that. Not only that, but there are only two core distinctions between a DMPC and a functioning assisting party member. I feel that the challenge here is not with the concept, but the ethical incorporation of the thing. Would you agree that if a DM could make a DMPC that functioned as a member of the party with no greater or lesser level of competence that it would be successful? What if said NPC demonstrated realistic flaws such as a player might incorporate into their own character? Unfortunately since the matter is subjective opinion, I have no evidence to further that particular argument, but I leave it to your thoughts.
A DMPC is much like a self-inserted character in a narrative
I feel that this implication could not be further from the truth. Is a grueling blacksmith's thoughts on his daughter's marriage indicative of the DM's own personal worldviews? If a Lich is creating a portal into the abyss for his dark lord's agents, does this mean the DM is secretly an undead monstrosity of great and terrible power feel all life should be eradicated by a hungry horde of demons? I should certainly hope not.
I would like to posit that a DMPC is much like any other NPC, save a few differences. Those being that the DM roleplays using the aforementioned DMPC more frequently than other NPCs (possibly), and has been built using the same rules used to create Player Characters.
I would like to wrap up by saying that there was actually a reason I wrote a several-hundred word essay on the subject. In many of the places I frequent, there is SIGNIFICANT hate given to the idea of a DMPC. I've rarely been anything but a Game Master, and I use DMPCs when necessary, so I've never personally had an issue with it. The reason why these two comments are so long is because I wanted to defend my platform fully.
1 To this writer, the definition of Mary Sue is a character that panders to the wish fulfillment fantasies of the author in a way that is ultimately detrimental to the story and the enjoyment of other players. It is difficult to codify what precisely a Mary Sue is, due to the term's subjective nature- it could be different for anyone.
A final note for those of you who have gotten so far in my writing- If you experience a DM who is using a bad DMPC, one that lessens the enjoyment of the majority of the group, you should talk to your DM about it. If they refuse to quit making the game unenjoyable, you should find another DM or perhaps volunteer yourself. There are millions of players. There are substantially less Game Masters.
