Honestly for that kind of thing I would just carry a 9mm or hand gun with light attached or keep a small one in your pocket for that. I don't think you will running into anything out there that wont be dropped by a couple rounds of any decent pistol caliber.

I keep my sp101 on my side, with the first round being ratshot for snakes. I would prefer to keep a rifle with me, also. I considered using the 870 instead of the 336, though.

Don't even both putting an optic on it if you're going to use a cheap one. If it broke a buffer tube, it'll break a cheap optic.

Didn't exactly break the buffer tube, just bent it slightly. The way I figured, if the optic is between the two "hands" of the gun rack, it should be fine. People have carried rifles with hunting scopes this way for years, and it hasn't knocked the zero off. I would prefer to have a red dot, since my main concern is if it's going to be getting dark on us like this.

I know magpul makes phone cases, hence the joke. I don't know where you live, but in the UK magpul phone cases are about £18, which is around $30. That's not cheap for a bloody phone case.
