What I would object to is someone on US$15/hour still expecting a tip. US$15 is a lot to me, and to expect $1 in the tip jar after I buy a coffee is plain wrong.

Well, think of this: Are the prices the same in California as they are where you are from? Mainly the minimum wage is to keep up with inflation (even if its a complete fucking failure of a lie).

That's a good point. Depending on what it was, prices were lower in the US compared to NZ. Apple products were cheaper over there. Same with GoPro. Milk was similar, fruit and vegetables varied.

Fuel surprised me: it's WAY cheaper in the US than in NZ. For a litre (0.26 US gallons) of Unleaded 91 in NZ it's currently NZ$1.929 (US$1.36).

I guess if you're averaging it across the board it makes sense to have a minimum wage that high. For me to be in the US it was quite expensive with the $ the way it was. Can't imagine what it must be like for someone on way less than minimum.
