Now theres 2 things Im pretty scared of:

1: the cpu throttling/overheating probally have permanantly damaged both its lifespan and performance.

2: the dead ram might have damaged the motherboard
User avatar
#45713 - rzkruspe (01/22/2016) [-]
1: if your motherboard isn't a piece of crap (which shouldn't be the case considering the upgrade pack and the Z97 chipset) and if the throttling did its job well, there's little chance it damaged the CPU or mobo. But if you've been running like this for a year, that might not be so true.

2: Yup.

Regarding you upgrading, the CPU cooler should be your priority. Then see if anything else seems alarming, you might have to change mobo and CPU.
If everything feels fine, go ahead and get an SSD.
8Gb of RAM should be enough if it's 'just' a gaming rig, and you won't see ANY difference if you get 16Gb or faster RAM (also using different RAM sets is never recommended or guaranteed to work).

Suggestions ? Samsung's EVO and PRO series are the most popular, Kingston's V300 have the best bang for your buck, I personally have a Plextor M6S cuz it was on sale, runs smoothly. Just get the best write/read speeds you can get for your money, as long as it's not a crappy unknown brand.

Like I said, change the cooler, you can get some pretty decent ones for dirt cheap.
One 120mm fan in the front+stock cooler is not fit for a gaming rig of any kind.

Then feel free to upgrade anything you want.

As the rookie I was I previously checked my CPU and dindt pin my cpu cooler on correctly. (that fucking one pin took me +30 mins to put in correctly) Checked some forums that said how awful annoying intel stock fan pins are
but anyway this is the results after running GTA V again (which was the one that stressed it most previous)

Im not sure why it still says overheat... its probally from previous test. but now its cooling correctly.. and suprise.. the gameplay is also smoother now... Im a retard

Change your CPU cooler, and stop gaming on this rig until you do so !

A Hyper 212 evo is $30 or ~220DKK, and will give you way better cooling than a stock cooler. If you already have a good aftermarket cooler, I suggest you take a look at the thermal paste.

relax. consider the other possibilities.
here's what im viewing right now
you have a broken hard drive. now, you're saying it's empty over and over again, but if it's really empty and devoid of data, you've never used it. so, you have a broken, new hard drive. dead on arrival parts exist, but i dont really think that's whats happened.
you can ask any of the regulars on the board. if i open up a file in windows, right click it and hit delete, i can recover that file. the file doesn't magically disappear into nothingness. the space that it was occupying is marked as free, and the os can write to it.
if you want to remove data, you need to mark the entire drive as free by formatting it, and then write junk to the drive so it can't be recovered. there are plenty of free utilities to both recover and shred hard drives. if i send a hard drive like yours to be repaired, the platters will simply be moved to another, functioning hard drive, and the data will be pulled from the drive.

you should have realized by now that I am not your subordinate, and getting mad at me is both pointless and time consuming.
you just said that "Once you delete something, it's fucking GONE." which isn't true.
you didnt bother googling "hdd clicking noise" and instead recorded a video, wrote up a post, and are now sitting here reading this.
you mentioned 3 times that it's empty, which it apparently is not, and 0 times that you dont care about the data. good for you.
you're ignoring the fact that physically destroying the drive is the only reliable way to ensure that data cant be accessed by another person.
you really are trying to sell one used, broken, micro usb hard drive. im not sure who the target audience is, even for parts. but if you can get a sale, again, good for you.
if anything, i should have realized that you really didnt know about that, because you dont know that if a hard drive is making that noise, it's probably fucking broken.

Try this to backup your data to another HDD. I saved a drive that didn't even show up in Computer thanks to that.
Also you should try another SATA interface to see if the behavior of your drive changes, it can be via another external drive case, or one of those drive cases you can buy alone, or directly to your motherboard if you know how to do that.

And that 256Gb ssd is waaaaayy more restrictive than I thought it would be.

I bought it for a specific audio editing software, $1.5k license, but the only available cracked version isn't compatible with OSX.8 and further.

I'll probably sacrifice the resolution for the entry-level XPS15.

There was a similar 2in1 presented at CES with a retractable kb.
Anyway, I won't really need that much horsepower, especially regarding the Quadro.

Do you know if the ux305 are upgradable ? If so I might just get the one with the i5 and go with 16Gb of RAM and a bigger SSD

The UX305LA-FB096T and UX305UA-FB019T do not have Core M's, but they're Dual Core's.
The XPS15's have discrete GPUs and Quad Core's, but no QHD+...

This is the exact reason why I came here for your opinions in the first place, way too many possibilities x)

top of the line xps15 does offer a 3840 x 2160 screen afaik
i dunno. ive been lugging around an aluminum "gaming" laptop for a few years now, so im definitely biased more towards performance than portability

Yeah but I find it stupid to rock a MacBook and only use Windows on it (although that's precisely what I'm doing now).

I'm looking for an all-purpose laptop with a good screen, that can handle light gaming and video editing.
The less bulky the better, 500+ Gb storage.

Can't think of anything else right now, but that's pretty much it I think.
