Your GPU, optical drive and HDD will still work. maybe RAM but I don't think yours is of the highest quality, being a prebuilt system and all, but I may be too skeptical
Your CPU won't.

So if you want a new system, get it now, not after upgrading this one.

This is a performance comparison of basically the best cpu you'd be able to get with your current config. In my own opinion it'd be better to save up some dough and build a new machine but for now you should prolly get a GTX 970 and a 500 watt power supply. That'll set you up for the rest of the upgrade in the future while giving you as much of a boost as you can now.

Well for about 1200 dollars and no peripherals (assuming you have some) pcpartpicker.com/user/short9000/saved/Ys4TwP that's the latest skylake from intel.

well Honestly then you can survive with just a GTX 950. It'll work well that i3 will probably be the only thing to take it down a little but if you want to get an i5 from ebay that RZK provided you'll be alright for some time.

This is 800 dollars and the best I could think of for good power and cheap price. and it's alright man i understand its expensive it took me a while to save for mine. pcpartpicker.com/user/short9000/saved/wzPRsY

There's something else you need to consider and that I didn't mention, you said you want to play Elite Dangerous, and this game like a few others, needs a 4 core CPU, which your i3 isn't.
Which means that to run it you absolutely need a new CPU or system altogether.

If you want to swap it out for a newer one, we're basically talking about a whole new system, that's up to you.

"Most performant" perhaps, but not most cost effective. It's a workstation; the
Intel Xeon E3-1231 is just an i7-4790 with the integrated graphics removed and a slightly lower frequency; it's $240 versus the 6700K's $370. The marginal difference isn't going to justify the extra $130.
WD Blacks are good, yes, but they're just a high performance Caviar model. The added 20MBps read/writes aren't going to justify its added cost. Some redundancy would be smart, however, you are right; thus, having two HDDs mirrored would be a good route. The best choice would be HGST as far as reliability is concerned, though: www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-stats-for-q2-2015/
The RAM itself is one or two nanoseconds quicker than other models (~23ns vs ~25), 1000MBps faster (~16,000 compared to ~15,000) read speeds, and pretty standard write speeds (~12,000). It's one of the best RAM modules on the market, but it's still only marginally better than its competition.
The parts would be suitable, absolutely... but you chose a lot of premium, enthusiast parts that aren't really cost effective.

thanks a lot,
If I saved a few months I could buy that model that you sent but that makes sense with what I'll be using and working on
I am currently at college but have bought professional equipment lately to work on film projects (just bought the Red One camera)

Holy crap man, hope you're having fun with it please make sure your sound equipment is on point too please

Also bear in mind that those are individual parts, without OS, and you'll have to build it yourself.
An equivalent pre-built would most likely cost $2000+

budget would be around $1000 but im lenient if its worth the extra bit
and I use Sony Vegas Pro, Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects mostly so they take a lot out of the average computer

$1000 will be a tight fit if you want processing power (believe me you do) and reliable storage. How lenient are you on your budget ?

This would be a beast for video editing, fast rendering, reliable real-time video feedback etc.
I went with a large SSD and redundant storage. The idea is to store your precious rushes on the HDDs in RAID, and use the SSD for everything else, transferring on it the data you're currently working on (hence the 500Gb).
But we're clearly over budget so I need to know how much you can spend.

You could save a few bucks now by choosing a single cheaper hard drive, but you'll need a backup system.
I have a few friends that work in professional cinema and assumed you were too, but I could very well be wrong.
