What exactly are you referring to when you say "Britannia didn't do shit where people actually had tech in Europe" because that makes no sense to me.
User avatar #87 - atusek (07/30/2015) [-]
I think what he means is that Britannia only really colonized lands that were inhabited by less advanced civilizations or just plain empty
#88 - myelfeyesseeporn (07/30/2015) [-]
That's how all colonisation works. If you have equal technology you need to have either tactics or numbers, The Romans were able to conquer as much as they did by having considerably better technology and tactics than the others. Since Britain was even footing with all the other European countries, they couldn't really take them over, although they get incredibly close with France during the 100 years war. But it's the same with how very few European countries were completely taken over at any point from about 1000AD onwards
#90 - gerfox (07/30/2015) [-]
Nah, the Romans had numbers. Massive numbers. In the punic wars for instance Hannibal was dependent on mercenary troops, while Rome could easily replace one legion they lost by simply raising another. After Cannae I think they even refused to ransom the war captives Hannibal had taken because they felt that they had dishonored Rome, and rather raised new legions.
#92 - myelfeyesseeporn (07/30/2015) [-]
Ah, my bad, but that still fits in with what I was saying about needing numbers, tactics or technology to conquer. I don't know a huge amount about the Romans and their history, and was mostly referring to them taking out the tribes. Thanks for the info
#93 - gerfox (07/30/2015) [-]
NP. And also, sometimes people think their superiority in tactics and equipment was there forever too - but in reality their equipment and tactics were just the best of what they had seen others use against them. For instance, they learned to fight in smaller more flexible units by the Sarmatians I think, two years since I took Roman history in college and learned to make a proper camp by the Etruscans I think again . However, they took their methods, and perfected them - and made it into an unbeatable blend in the end. Combined with superior numbers that led to them being unbeatable for a long time.
#100 - myelfeyesseeporn (07/30/2015) [-]
Yeah, the whole thing about other peoples tactics to their own was something I was aware of, coincidentally enough I was talking about it with some friends earlier today. Pretty neat shit

The most impressive thing for though is how they managed to topple Carthage at sea. Originally having no experience at sea warfare, and being poor ship builders. Firstly, they managed to dismantle a stranded Carthaginian ship - and rebuild it. Then they applied the Carthaginian design to their own fleet - and thus had ships of equal quality to their opponents.

However, they were smart as fuck too. They invented the metal thing that you always see people use in movies when they throw ropes at the top of walls so that it sticks, and they can climb up. They invented those so they could throw them at the Carthaginian boats, and then reel them in and board them. The Romans would man their boats with more soldiers than the Carthaginians, so when in a boarding situation they would have the advantage.

You go to a movie and there is a guy in a seat already. You leave a buffer seat. And if you go with a friend and there is an option to leave a buffer, you do. How is that wrong?
User avatar #29 - alucardexplain (07/28/2015) [-]
If its any random person, then yeah the buffer. But you must have some giant friends for them to need more than one seat's worth of leg room.
#34 - justtocomment (07/28/2015) [-]
I'm 6'2" and many of my friends are even taller.
User avatar #42 - alucardexplain (07/28/2015) [-]
Thats really not that big. I meant fat giant, not slightly taller than average.
#43 - justtocomment (07/28/2015) [-]
Weight isn't an issue, leg length is.
It's like sitting on a couch at home - you could either sit right next to each other, or sit on opposite ends of the couch to get more room.
User avatar #45 - alucardexplain (07/28/2015) [-]
I've got plently of leg length, I understand. But your entire group of friends must have gigantic balls to need to spread your legs far enough to put buffer seats between each other. That or you aren't actually comfortable sitting right next to friends, which is aalso an oddity.
#47 - justtocomment (07/28/2015) [-]
Why would you not utilize the opportunity for added comfort?
User avatar #48 - alucardexplain (07/28/2015) [-]
It just doesn't seem neccesary. Im about 6' and alot of that is leg. I've never had a problem with leg spreading range. I don't need a whole field between my friends and I. I only need enough to let my balls rest comfortably, and every theatre I've been to in America has provided ample room, friends/family on either side.
#51 - justtocomment (07/28/2015) [-]
Look, if your knees don't touch your immediate neighbor's, then good for you. But I can personally claim that mine do. Hell, look at the content - those two men in those seats? The middle armrest alone would be a nightmare.
User avatar #52 - alucardexplain (07/28/2015) [-]
You must be 80% leg if thats a real issue. The middle armrest is a non-issue. Use it or let the other guy have it.
User avatar #14 - SirFail (07/28/2015) [-]
you leave a buffer seat between friends at the cinema? really? even when there is no need and you have the entire room to your friend group? My group of friends normally go as a 10 ish group and we never bothered with that, i'm the only bi/gay one yet everyone sits next to each other almost shoulder to shoulder at the cinema regardless of spare seats.
#21 - justtocomment (07/28/2015) [-]
It's for leg room, dude. That way we can all spread out legs for comfort and not play footsies.
