That pdf states they count a 75$ console game as the same thing as a 2$ app and if you have ever used a app you are a gamer. - If that is not biased to inflate the value of females in the market I don't know what is.

"Male gamers will always be there and will buy the stuff no matter what the heroes look like(as evidenced by stuff like the GTA games, Bayonetta, Tomb Raider, and other games with female protagonists), so why not add to that revenue by making it a more welcome environment for women? " because SJW's want games to fit feminist not women and it doesn't stop at adding more female protagonists it also means all there other demands like No large breasts or sexualiation of women via provocative clothes or skimp Armour , no women being rescued. no women getting killed in the story , no princesses, no over the top violence, no mayhem, no using gender based derogatory worlds like cunt or dick , no heterosexual sex scenes, no male hero's saving women in need, no women being portrayed as stay at home mothers, no sexual assault like touching female npc's with out consent or tea-bagging female characters in halo. If you honestly think male gamers would stay if the gaming industry instituted all the changes feminist and sjw's want then you are a retard.

"Name me five games announced at E3 this year that featured a female protagonist or a protagonist of color that aren't part of an established franchise"- way to move the fucking goal post now it's not enough to have a bunch of female protagonists they also have to be showcase headliners from new franchises ? Women are a minority of the market so naturally there are less games with female leads then male leads. Not to mention women are allow on the front lines so that rules out almost every war simulation game.

"The same exact study also found that 46% of all frequent video game purchasers are female."- are they counting a 70$ console game in the same category as a 2$ app ?
Also I would like to see this study.

Regardless of what games they play, they still make up a huge chunk of the community(personally, I've always found the line between "casual" and "hardcore" gamers to be quite stupid in general, and I don't see how either of those makes either category less of a gamer than the other, but there's me trying to be inclusive again). - Again if females are not buying console games but 2$ apps they are not really helping the console gaming industry very much are they ? If Women only make up 5% of RPG sales they are not a very important demographic.

" wouldn't it make more sense to try and capture that missing demographic by making the majority of games more inclusive in its portrayals of varied and dynamic characters, be it through gender, race, religion, etc. without having to adhere to marginalization and stereotypes? There are certainly games out there that do that, but the fact that we can call those out so readily just shows how few and far between they actually are. I'm not trying to knock on developers' creative vision, especially because this is rarely ever their fault, but it seems to me like the publishers needlessly limit themselves when it comes to their audience. " -Most games these days are very inclusive but the problem is feminists and SJW's who account for about 1% of gamers are demanding drastic changes that will force many men out of gaming if they are instituted. Why should gaming companies who only exist because men supported them for the last few decades turn their backs on the largest part of their market to cater to the tiny sjw/feminist minority who only care about video games because it is one of the few male friendly places left in the world and they want to infest corrupt and feminize it to suit their desires ?

My point is that if they do open up and appeal to that demographic more, they could stand to make a lot more money than they already do. Game publishers already spend a shit ton of money trying to appeal to a wider audience as is, why not try and make it even wider by being more inclusive to other races and genders? Maybe if they did that, you'd see those percentages in the demographics go up. The male gamers will always be there and will buy the stuff no matter what the heroes look like(as evidenced by stuff like the GTA games, Bayonetta, Tomb Raider, and other games with female protagonists), so why not add to that revenue by making it a more welcome environment for women? I don't see a single downside to more inclusiveness in video games.

Right here is where you lost me. You realize that this sounds every bit as insane as the typical anti-gaming rants such people you're referring to go on, right?

Those games exist already and more are released every year.

Name me five games announced at E3 this year that featured a female protagonist or a protagonist of color that aren't part of an established franchise as the main prayable character. I can almost guarantee you if you try to do this, you will probably need to Google it, and if you don't see how that isn't symptomatic of exactly the thing I'm talking about, there's no helping you.

And don't get me wrong here, I don't actually care about the politics of all this, and I'm not here to suck out the fun of games that other people find enjoyment in. All I want from this discussion(not literally this discussion, but the discussion of representation in the gaming community as a whole) is to be able to find more triple-A games where the hero isn't a just a generic white guy, or where the women don't just exist as eye candy. I just want more characters that look as different and dynamic as they act between different games.

That study funded by feminist pooled girls who play any cell phone mini game at least once in their lives in the same pool as hardcore gamers that buy and play console games +12 hours a week. It is biased as all hell. Actual studies that divide them in to categories find that females make up between 15% and 5% of hardcore gamers in any given genre using a xbox or playstation or wii, 18-20% of moderate gamers and 43% of casual gamers who almost exclusively use cellphones or a wii .
User avatar #64 - romeosdistress (07/12/2014) [-]
Actually, the study I'm referring to was conducted by the ESA, a.k.a. the Entertainment Software Association, a.k.a. the people who run E3 and is made up of all of the biggest video game publishers in the US. How is that even close to biased? It would serve them absolutely no purpose to take one side in an argument. I don't see an end goal here.

The same exact study also found that 46% of all frequent video game purchasers are female. Meaning they are actively spending money on video games almost as much as men. Regardless of what games they play, they still make up a huge chunk of the community(personally, I've always found the line between "casual" and "hardcore" gamers to be quite stupid in general, and I don't see how either of those makes either category less of a gamer than the other, but there's me trying to be inclusive again).

And even if, for the sake of argument, said study is wrong, doesn't that actually prove my case? Wouldn't it make more sense to try and capture that missing demographic by making the majority of games more inclusive in its portrayals of varied and dynamic characters, be it through gender, race, religion, etc. without having to adhere to marginalization and stereotypes? There are certainly games out there that do that, but the fact that we can call those out so readily just shows how few and far between they actually are. AFAIK, it's only split 55%-45% if you count anyone who's ever tried a game as a "video game player". I know some of those studies even include smartphone gamers.
Also, men are typically more "hardcore" gamers, and male gamers tend to play significantly more per day than female gamers do.

I do agree that inclusivity is good, though. Thing is, I don't think the market is particularly exclusive. A lot of more recent titles let you choose your character's sex, and really, most of the actual girl gamers don't really care either way maybe a skewed example, but a lot of girls playing Mass Effect prefer male Sheperd . Most of the people who complain about it aren't even gamers.

It depends what market you're going into.

MMO? Action? FPS? Sports? You're probably looking at 30% female 70% male. Mobile games, casual games, and other games like that (which are a large part of the industry) are probably 50/50, some genres most likely even favoring women, which brings the average closer to 45%.
