Reminds me of either the 4chan or Tumblr post about "what if Humans were the most dangerous species". Like, if we were Krogan and we encountered tree-like space aliens.
Something something pursuit predator.

The reason we always think that is because that's what is most likely. Going off of what we know, there aren't any planets okay, maybe a few, but not many out there that have the possibility of intelligent life that would be able to supports some type of large animals. The largest we know of on out planet was the T-Rex I think. There might've been something bigger and that's because of the large amount of oxygen. I suppose, it's a possibility that if the aliens have a large abundance of the substance(s) that they breath, they might be very large, but I still find it unlikely.

yes, a lot of it is just humans marching along the galaxy being superior but many of them bring up how thing might be in space and a few of them are really good. ill post a few i think you would like. if you want more after this that is

If there was aliens.. a sentient species.. that would be able to view us from a couple hundred light years away.. I don't think they would have the funds to visit us. Within the next 4000 years we are going to populate mars, as resources start to dwindle. things will become more renewable (wind, ocean, and solar energy) and humans will become more military and oragnized.

you think so? about the military part? i mean, it is entirely possible and maybe even the most likely scenario but i don't know.
i just look at all the stuff that we have made, many of them peaceful and helping everyone to bring out their artistic talent. i hope we can reach a future where we focus most on advancement, tech and the wellbeing of everyone. then again, we only have so far until we actually reach that state now. and when we are there? who knows what we will do.

You can focus on the peaceful, the ease around you. Even during an earthquake the sky is still. But humans are still humans. Look at uncivilized countries. They are shitty, violent, and somewhat chaotic at times. Then look at other countries. Education directly correlates to violent crime.
by militarized i mean most leaders are generals, and all interests of the countries or factions are decided and acted out by the military and their officials and governments.
Thats the best way. Either be a laborer, businessman, or soldier. In the future, their will be no room for those who do not work. with 7 billion people we are already stretched thin with poverty and famine.
Hope that helps!

... um no I don't. I was lucky in my school career. Graduating from college this May and the highest level math i've ever taken was Statistics. No trig, no calc, no pre calc, nothing above Statistics.

I always thought that was bullshit. Once you go on to become an engineer or whatever you aren't going to do anything on paper. Everything is going to be done on some kind of math program like Maple or Mathematica. I guess limiting the students to paper gives them an intuitive feel for what's going on but it really limits them once they get to the more difficult courses.
#133 - guymandude (03/04/2014) [-]
I absolutely agree. College is meant to prepare you for a career, yet in restricting Engineering students to paper, they are explicitly NOT preparing us. I understand that they want us to get an intuitive feel for it like you said - but I imaging that if we spent all those semesters of calc on paper using computer programs instead, then we would be much better with calc in the way we would need it upon graduation

I'm not proud of it. You asked if I even differentiate and i'm guessing that's a calculus term so I told you I don't differentiate.
#124 - rollinquads (03/04/2014) [-]
I mean I consider alot of everyday things calclus, but that people don't realize they're doing it (I.E if you drove for 60 miles an hour for 7 hours its just you integrating 60 from 0 to 7). Now obviously this is taught as a basic rate equation and might not be considered "integration" because you aren't integrating a variable, but I, personally feel like we don't teach it to kids in high school as well as we could because we don't acknowledge the similarities. I guess what im trying to say is if we apply calculus to every day life, maybe 80% of the population wouldn't hate it so goddamn much.

yeah, the whole distance velocity acceleration relationship is so simple when explained like that, but when you have a kid write down d^2y/dx^2+4dy/dx+5y=0, you're bound to confuse them. Now obviously when you're doing mechanics in physics and you're solving for a distance of like 20 as opposed to solving for cosx+sinx, you have to teach it in a more advanced manner, but making that connection can help simplify the learning process i feel...
But to answer your question simply, yes, haha

Another physics student here.
We learned to calculate the mass of stars using tools and such. The only thing I could think was "Why the fuck do I care if Omega-Penis-Alpha-Gamma52 up there is 8 trillion milligrams? It's lightyears away, nobody is going to ever reach it. And even if we can reach it what the fuck are we going to do with a star? Unless it has valuable shit within it, who the fuck cares?".
