I care, because I want people to make games however they want, regardless of content. I don't like the idea of people who have some very specific artistic perspectives coming into the industry and driving it in one direction. Like any other artistic medium, I want game devs to be able to express all aspects of pretty much anything in anyway they want. Those who don't deliver will (ideally) be weeded out so the talented and skilled can prosper.
There are people who are coming into the industry with an agenda that demand games, or at least some aspects of game development be changed to fit their own checklist. I think that's a load of shit, because it defeats the idea of games evolving into a mature artistic medium. They can have their opinions, of course, and very much should be part of the overall discussion, but they should not be the only voice of the narrative. Everyone should be able be represented, and while they claim that's their objective, it seems clear to me, that that isn't the case. They want to favor some things and severally cripple others. And that's bullshit.

It's changing around to essentially kicking out all of the pretentious cunts who want to try to run our shit into the ground.

I need to make a text document so I can copy/pastse this to every guy that thinks "but I don't need da reviews"
"The movement has no specific list of demands, but it is quite clear what its general attitude is. It wants the cultural warriors out. It wants the cosy clique of activists and journalists to lose their influence. It wants the demonisation of gamers to end. It wants diversity, not conformism."

It's alright to be critical of anything, that's what reviewers do. People like Sarkeesian are a little different. She's not criticizing one game at a time or even a whole company. She makes claims that games, those things that she's been playing for about 4 years, as an entity are wrong for not meeting her standards. And because of her influence on the internet, she had been allowed to directly address DICE on their development of the new Mirror's Edge ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ghCI4pB1Rw )
And maybe it's not much to think about now, but imagine briefly, say in a year or so, the people at Valve finally have a beta done for Half-Life 3. The play testers say all the bugs are worked out, and the writers are happy with how their story progresses through the game, and the artists are happy with how their artwork has translated to 3D, and everyone thinks its time to move onto alpha, but then some person, some blogger or journalist who's their at the board meeting says something like "I didn't like how little representation of the Dominican people their was" or "I feel like Gordon's lack of struggle with his sexuality sends a bad message about the LGBTQLMNOP community" Or "There wasn't enough portrayals of Oompaloompas as strong characters". And because of some personal relationship they have with a developer, or their ties with whatever company produces the game, their opinion is what sends the whole thing back to the drawing board. Now, that's just an example of what might happen, I'm pretty sure Valve is smarter than to let something like that affect their games; I'm just saying it's a slippery slope. And while this is happening, people who just want to play games, and not have them changed as a whole to fit a general agenda, are accused of being oppressive shitlords in support of whatever 'social injustice' is trending on tumblr that week.

"It's alright to be critical of anything, but if people pay attention to the critics I disagree with it then I'm gonna flip out. Also, tumblr and SJW and gender roles have to come into this, even though Sarkeesian doesn't dip into either of those three waters because who else am I going to pull into this giant fallacy I dare to call an argument"
#1076509 - Viceroy (10/18/2014) [-]
It has nothing to do with gender roles or social justice. That's not why people are upset. It'd be no different atheist radicals wanted to remove any semblance of religious influence in games, and were using personal relation ships and media influence to make that happen. It's the place of consumers to make critiques after something is made, but it's not alright to force someone to change their vision to better suit their personal views.

Alright then, mister. Also, Sarkeesian hasn't a gun to anybody's head, EA hired her as consultant for a game, the game's in development, she's not "changing anybody's vision to better suit their taste". In any case, the worst that woman would do is turn everybody into a woman an the bad guy into a man. Would be pretty shitty, but it's like complaining about the HUD of Guitar Hero changing. No one with any amount of discerning criteria should care.
#1076534 - Viceroy (10/18/2014) [-]
Those were just examples. What's important is that the person could have said any dumb thing and completely changed the game.
And yeah, right now she's just a consultant. Despite however biased whatever she could possibly have to say is, no one has to take her seriously. But if it goes ignored, and more people with such biased views get hired to do this stiff that they have absolutely no business in, thing's are going to change for the worse. If people don't do anything, then people will decide what games get made and what games don't based on whatever personal agenda they may have. Be it religious views, sexuality, or Oompaloompa rights.

Except, consultants are just that. Consultants. They're not game directors, and they don't have final say. If the team disagrees with the consultants, they have no obligation to follow through with their recommendation. And what is Sarkeesian going to do to Mirror's Edge, again. What, pray tell, is this catastrophic incantation that will bring about the end of... something or other, that she will subliminally put in the game?
And then there's the matter of the inevitability for it. If whatever ancient curse Sarkeesian is going to weave into the code of the game is truly a change that revolts everyone, then guess what? The game ain't going to sell, and she ain't going to get more work, and that's going to be the end of that. If people love to have an ancient Peruvian deity crawl out of their stomachs every time thei turn on their game, then, well, it's going to sell like gang busters. And all the people who wanted to see their guts devoured by an abomination while playing a game will finally be happy. And more people -Who?, Really, you have to stop being so nebulous. Who are these people?- in that same school will get more work, to please that audience. Why do you not want these people to play the game they want to play, if that's what they want to play? After all, if they are a majority, an under served majority, they should get the game they want. And if they truly are just a loud and ominous army of evil that doesn't represent the public at large as you suggest, then every attempt to please that crowd with big AAA games will under perform and ultimately end on that crowd being abandoned.
Your logic just doesn't hold up. Your army of evil has no power -if it even exists. And your poor harassed "people with a vision" are actively looking for the people you claim are harassing them, and who you seem to think will do something unspeakable to their creation, against the will of the creators, even though they don't have the means to do so.
#1076594 - Viceroy (10/18/2014) [-]
You're absolutely right. There's every reason to think what ever affect the feminists might have on games won't mean shit in the end because whatever games they make will suck. Eventually she'll run out of the money she conned out of people and have nothing to fall back on when people stop caring about social justice and realize what a farce she is. But some people don't want to just wait for that to happen all the while being vilified and shat on. They don't want developers and journalists spouting slander about gamers just because they think they can. If we can't keep shit like this from happening in gaming, then we're shit out of luck when shit really hits the fan.
#1076597 - thebestpieever (10/18/2014) [-]
Oh, so that's really it? Tim Schaffer and Kotaku and TechnoBuffalo said something about the amorphous blob that is "gamers" and so we must all flip out, and continuously complaint about it. This cannot stand! Some bloke said something about a nebulously defined group, we must march at dawn!
