I've worked in gaming retail and I know pre-ordering a game guarantees you get your copy on the first day when sometimes a title can sell out for a while. (Rare, but its happened) We used to pre-book PS4s too and I remember they sold out really quickly and you couldn't get one for a few weeks as Sony hadn't made enough for the demands.

Pre-ordering is for people who want to make sure they get their copy on the first day, thats pretty much it. I personally don't care and I've never seen a game which made me want to prebook it.

What annoys me most is that almost all games come with an extra level or character or something which you don't get if you don't pre-order, for example the new Batman, if you pre-order on the PS4 (in the UK anyway) you get some Harley Quinn level and get to play as her and Scarecrow I think. I'd love to play as them, they should just make it part of the entire game. But they need to make money so I kinda understand that they're trying their best to boost sales.
#162 - bensho (06/08/2015) [-]
You might not get a copy if you didn't pre-order. Because at its core, that's what pre-ordering is: literally ordering a copy of the game to be delivered to the store. Then you get codes for dlc and shit sometimes on the receipt or in GTAV's case there were pre-order editions and day-one editions which didn't have 1,000,000 GTA $.
User avatar #108 - ragingbrony (06/08/2015) [-]
For popular games, it ensures that you'll actually get it day 1, and don't run the risk of it being out of stock.

In many cases, pre-ordering a game will also come with other physical merchandise that you otherwise can't get. (usually only for Physical copies of the game, not Digital downloads)

Rarely it also unlocks in-game content (more common with Steam Copies than Physical copies), but it's usually just cosmetic features.
User avatar #127 - putindispencerhere (06/08/2015) [-]
Digital copies can't run out
User avatar #230 - KillinTime (06/08/2015) [-]
but when the game is 60GB preordering lets you download the game before all the people who didn't preorder, meaning you actually get to play when the game comes out instead of sitting around for a few hours downloading shit.
User avatar #234 - putindispencerhere (06/08/2015) [-]
I fairly certain pre ordering doesn't let you download it before anyone else.
User avatar #128 - ragingbrony (06/08/2015) [-]
I'm aware
That was mainly for physical copy games
User avatar #63 - snacky (06/08/2015) [-]
some games come with extra in game stuff like cosmetics, some come with real stuff like books and maps and shit.
#59 - noschool (06/08/2015) [-]
reviews come out when the game is released, it isn't just about "pre ordering" it's about buying a game uninformed.
#192 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
I've seen quite a few gameplay videos before the game released, plus reviewers can get copies before launch very often. In fact, games get shit when the reviewers can't see the game before launch
User avatar #52 - thatscrewedupkid (06/07/2015) [-]

Nothing. Some popular douche was against pre-orders, so everyone makes a thing out of it, despite there being absolutely no downside to pre-ordering a game.
User avatar #143 - cshp (06/08/2015) [-]
Well pre-ordering a game gives money for a product that doesn't exist yet, so companies can make a profit based on pre-orders without having to worry about making a quality game
#103 - pentol (06/08/2015) [-]
you make a decision based on hype, instead of impressions. you enable the industry to make games that sell on hype, instead of substance. you tie up money you could have sitting in your bank account. you risk the game being shit and then actually having to buy it. rational human beeings laugh at you for buying promises.
User avatar #98 - therockofshame (06/08/2015) [-]
Now we just need some popular douche to be against selfie sticks.

>pre order
>get shit game
>waste time and potentially money if you can't get a refund

>don't pre order
>hear game is shit
>don't waste anything

i hate the "well i was gonna buy it anyway" argument because that is a terrible way to approach buying anything. there have been plenty of games people got burned on because they preordered a game they didn't like.

"You know, I'm really excited for this game, but I'm going to go on the internet and let other people's opinions judge whether or not I'm going to buy the thing that I am excitedf or."

I've never not liked a game I pre-ordered. Plus, you can always return the game.
User avatar #221 - severepwner (06/08/2015) [-]
I've liked pretty much every game I've preordered except Assassin's Creed Unity. That was when I decided I shouldn't anymore.

Halo Reach
Gears of War 3
Halo 4
Grand Theft Auto 5, console and PC
several previous Assassin's Creed games
Fallout New Vegas
Mass Effect 3

and a few others I never regretted. Pre-ordering becoming a questionable decision is very recent for me.
#80 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
that's a terrible idea to have, like if a bunch of people said don't go to that restaurant it has rats, would you go there and eat? retailers, at least in my area, don't give refunds and if they do it is still a waste of time. if you are using steam why even risk it? steam won't run out of the game. plus the incentives they give out for pre order bonus are resources they could have used to make the game better or just assets they took out of the game.
User avatar #84 - demandsgayversion (06/08/2015) [-]
You don't understand how DLC came about. Once developers could put stuff in their game after launch, they could put things in the game after it was released. Would you rather postpone the game's launch for a week for an armor set, or just pre-order the game and get it for free?

And your restaurant metaphor is extremely biased. Just because some cunt on the internet says a game is bad, doesn't mean you won't like the game. Reviews on videogames are absolute bullshit. There are no objectively bad games. And pre-ordering on Steam lets you preload the game.
User avatar #270 - jokersaysamuseme (06/08/2015) [-]
I'd rather the developers fully finish a game before releasing it. Rather than sending out updates or DLC, just finish the game, make sure its perfect and then release it.

wait a minute... Does someone on FJ have the same opinion on me about this whole "No Pre-orders" Fiasco?

If i'm hyped for a game then im going to preorder it, bonuses or not BECAUSE i want the game day 1 and i wont look at reviews because i dont care what other people think about games, its what i think about games that matters to me.
#269 - jokersaysamuseme (06/08/2015) [-]
If you want the game day 1, fair enough, pre-ordering is perfect, but personally, I've never been so hyped I had to have it day 1. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I have a fuck load of games I need to complete first before I buy anything new.

If someone finished the Resident Evil 3.5 game (the game which was originally going to be Resident Evil 4 before they scrapped it) come alive and brought it to the new consoles or remade Resident Evil 4 for PS4, I'd pre-order the shit out of those!

son, a bug ridden game is objectively a bad game
#158 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
Yet this site worshiped Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the games that the PC players actually had to patch by themselves. Really hypocritical to defend any other game.
#95 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
Mortal kombat x has game breaking bugs, and deletes your savefiles,
LBP3 crashes every 30 minutes, And Aliens: Colonial Marines sucks balls. The devs might lure people into buying by giving out free download codes for a gun skin with dicks painted on them, just so people can buy the game before the consumers and the reviewers find out how unpolished/unplayable it is. pre ordering games gives them healthy amounts of sales despite being filled with bugs and errors on launch and need to have several weeks of patches before it becomes pleasant to play it again.
#157 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
Ya, MKX isn't working on PC, the last platform that anyone would buy a fighting game on. And this is an issue that's not reaching to other platforms, so there's more at work than the game in that respect. Never head anything from LBP3 and never had an issue.
User avatar #263 - derivat (06/08/2015) [-]
It's not like you can hook up a controller to a pc to make it exactly the same as a console but with better graphics, right?
#296 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
It's not like MKX is leaps and bounds ahead on the PC version either, have you even seen the PS4 version? Guess not when you'll cling to a crappy port instead of buying literally the same game for a different platform.
User avatar #312 - derivat (06/09/2015) [-]
Yeah, except I don't play fighters and neither own a current-gen console or a pc good enough to run anything released after 2011.
#93 - anon (06/08/2015) [-]
i don't see how it is biased, i am not gonna say reviews are perfect, but there are some reliable reviewers you trust. i got an idea that ride to hell sucked dick, aliens colonial marined was a massive disappointment, Shadow of Mordor was pretty good, etc. i am not saying do what the reviewer says, i am saying read their review, see why they did or didn't like the game and make a decision on whether the game seems fun to you. do you think the developer, who is the only source of info on the game before release, is more reliable than reviewers? cause pre order is saying the developer convinced me to buy their game. to your first question i would never pre order a game.

**karvarausku used "*roll picture*"**
**karvarausku rolled image** DLC were called updates back in the day.
User avatar #186 - ryalag (06/08/2015) [-]
Gonna go out on a limb and say they were called Expansions. Some had around the same amount of content and most 'Actual' DLC (being like more missions/stuff and not just oh look pretty armor, i.e Mass Effect DLC) and some had a fuck ton of new stuff, i.e Supreme Commander, Pretty much every Blizzard game ever, SIns of a Solar Empire, Dragon Age, Dark Souls 2. ETC. They were also more expensive than DLC

Not all DLC is bad people just need to get their heads out of their ass about this mentality that "It could have been in the game from the start" when the game gets a set release date and is finished they don't have the time to be like "But what if we added this new massive area that has 20 hours more content" because that shit aint gonna fly with whoever is in charge.
Like forreal mang, people on FJ bitch about bandwagons all the time but this "all DLC is bad" takes the cake for the stupidest
i do agree that costume DLC/stupid shit like that shouldnt be paid for and should just be given with updates

im also going to preorder the shit out of any game that im hyped for, mainly Fallout4 and HoMM 7, even though HoMM6 was a shit fest i love the series and will support it no matter what . Little self entitled children on the internet arent going to stop me from spending my money on what i want to.
