I only knew these actors THROUGH Friends.
They all really go their career from friends, although I don't see any but Jennifer Aniston anymore.
But you DO know them, a LOT of people know them. Ergo they are famous.

I'll never understand how this show was so popular to make that much money, but I guess I was a bit late to the series anyway
It was a good show because the chemistry was just right. They all were so natural in their roles and they all blended together nicely. I still rewatch it because it is just so enjoyable. I only wish it lasted longer because Mike would have been a great addition to the group. He kinda was already, but his role was more of a guest appearance slot.
I was only a kid at the time so maybe I'm wrong about this, but I don't think many other sitcoms in that time were really good or popular. The only other ones that really come to mind are Seinfeld and Full House. Both of which were a hit or miss in terms of people liking them. Friends was kind of universally liked.
It's a good show to glance at now and then if you're doing something else. You don't really need context in most cases when you happen to look on the screen if you know the characters so you'll just go "Oh, [Cast Member] is doing something wacky, that's so [Cast Member]". I also like it for purely nostalgic reasons, since it's one of the first shows I ever really "watched".
If I found it nowadays I wouldn't consider viewing more than an episode or two, it wouldn't have appealed to me at all. But I know all the characters, and have fond memories of it, so that does it for me. I'm guessing a similar opinion to mine is pretty common out there, at least it is according to some people I know in real life who used to watch it as well. Nobody loved it, but they've all watched it all and enjoyed it enough.
To put it in perspective, if the money made is anything to go by, then it was about as popular as lost was combined with how popular GoT is right now. That's pretty enormous.
- he hit a guy in the head with a lock, its atempted murder, no …

Apparently, a Judge cannot be punished for anything he does in his official capacity.
