Know anything about when we'll see 2TB 9.5mm 2.5" drives?

There are 2.5" 7mm 1TB SSDs out now, so probably the near future maybe.

Do you not realize how big games and movies have gotten? A single 20 minute episode in 1080p is like 2-3 gigs or more depending on file type. A full length movie is 7-15. Games are starting to hit 30+ GB installed. COD:Ghosts was 50 something. Wait till 4K actually becomes a mainstream thing.

Hell, remember the game RAGE? Uncompressed, that game was over a terabyte by itself.

#19 - Visual (11/30/2013) [-]
Anything uncompressed is huge
#20 - lordaurion (11/30/2013) [-]
I know but a lot of people don't realize just how big some stuff is. Most just see .rar files or something and think things only get compressed about 10-15%

Except there's a physical limit to how small the sectors can get. the reason why HDD's are at 4-5 TB's right now is because to make the bits any smaller and denser would cause them to interfere with each other and corrupt things. using tricks like lasers and helium will get things a little bit better, but ultimately there's no way for conventional hard drives to get to 60 TB's without a some sort of groundbreaking innovation.
#7 - anon (11/30/2013) [-]
And you expect there not to be any groundbreaking innovations?
User avatar
#8 - okamiterasu (11/30/2013) [-]
No, not really. They've been around for more than 60 years, and are still slow, inefficient, and one of the biggest bottleneck of any system. The whole concept is outdated. By the next decade, we'll have moved on to Resistive RAM or something

Scientists were recently able to store a byte of data in something the size of like 12 atoms. So....I guess that breakthrough kinda happened.
