Sounds like America. Theres a whole group of people here who believe that the education system is set up in such a way that a majority of people are "dumbed down" to the point there wont be a societal resistance to a reshaping of how our government works.

When you learn about the cold war, do you at least learn how McCarthy did nothing wrong?

i don't remember if we learnt about McCarthy, sorry. Also, our school system is more inept than biased, though I suppose a little bit of both. Teachers aren't allowed to advertise political points of view, though are free to discuss. Instead of having propaganda in the curriculum we just don't have the subject at all, at least that's how I feel.

Exactly what do you learn in Norwegian schools?
User avatar #41 - rainbowrush (07/25/2015) [-]
Not a whole lot. We're currently in a downwards trend, not sure when it'll change. You have three sets of school, kind-of before college, 2 of which are mandatory, so I'll try to explain a bit, in order. You have 1st-7th grade, 8th-10th grade, and HS 1st-3rd, some have 2 years.

First years of elementary are learning the basics, spelling, reading, English, Norwegian, some maths and religion. Then you're learning multiplications and division. You're taught to memorize rather than figure it out for yourself, in most cases. You then learn some geography, read a lot, improve in maths and some English. The focus, however, is not on learning, but on tests. Most teachers protest this, but politicians use tests to prove that "they care" or get propaganda to get more votes.

Middle school (8-10) is a shitfest. Not gonna say much, but in all 3 years all you learn is about WW2 and the cold war, in history, you work on what language you chose, and some bits and pieces from other stuff. You briefer touch Shakespeare, but you don't actually learn much other than reading some of his plays. For maths and science you're taught that if you don't follow the teachers exact way, you get 0 points.

For HS I will only touch what's mandatory. In maths and science you learn that the methods you were fored to use in middle school were bad, and they actually explain why stuff is like it is, more understanding than "repeat what I say". Not a lot to comment on. We learn the basics just like everyone else, though just a bit behind in depth. History: more WW2 but also different revolutions. Religion we just go through some of the, ending with us working on one on our own. English: Some more Shakespeare. We have 4 hours of Norwegian each weak 1st and 2nd grade. 6 hours in 3rd. There's a lot of different things we go through, most of no importance and nothing in-depth because of how much it is. We also get some other basic stuff, not worth mentioning.

There are a couple of ways to improve this shit we call a school system. We should give more power to teachers (deciding number of tests, have a say regarding the curriculum...) We should have professionals work on the curriculum, and less interference from politicians and board people. Middle school neds to be looked at.

Some other personal pinions. More in-depth stuff. More analyzing. More work on learning how to write, what words to usem etc... Less Norwegian (we have 2 languages, we should cut the hundreds of hours learning to write the other one. People who write 1 understand 2 just fine and vice versa). We should have more PE.

Well yeah it's Norwegian. Take an English Literature class if it's that important to read Shakespeare.

If R1 and R2 are too low-level for you then you should talk to a counsellor or teacher. Some schools offer an even more advanced maths course, and lets students from other schools take it as well, but it has no real application unless you want to be a mathematician.

Complaining about PE makes you look like a huge nerd. But yeah it's kinda meh having that in a line of study that is primarily theoretical.
But everyone has to do the obligatory stuff anyway, which in the third year is cut down to Norwegian and PE only, as long as you took a third language in middle school which you should have
And High School is still pushing people into sciency stuff. Pretty much none of those classes had overlapping hours, whereas if you feel like studying both psychology and social-anthropology they pretty much go "fuck you" and put those in the exact same hours

He is. As is Maslow and a whole slew of others. They come up in High School if you actually choose classes where they're relevant.
About half the fucking grade in Norwegian is you having to analyze a book you chose yourself, usually you'll choose something good. And I have no idea how fucking long we spent reading snippets of important literary works. We spent fucking ages on rhetoric.
For the most part analysing texts and art and shit though

My Russian course was really heavy on grammar, but then again when you know Russian grammar all you need is a dictionary and you can translate everything ever. The rest was one half talking it and one half learning the culture. The latter of which I hear was a pretty prominent part of other language courses.

Some maths courses are a joke. Practical and whatever the S stands for. T which leads into R1 and R2? Not so much.

High school caters to science like fucking crazy, too. Straight down to the timetable.

No idea how it is in anything but ST, but if you chose anything else and expected to be taught theory then I got news for you
User avatar #38 - rainbowrush (07/25/2015) [-]
You could only choose from Scandinavian authors and most of that work had to be done in your own time. A lot of teachers ignore this, though. There are three hours scheduled for rhetoric in third grade, that is it. May vary depending on where you are in the country and how much your teacher follows "the plan".

R1 and R2 are fine for most people, but not really for the better students. There are no option for advanced maths. If you choose maths, chemistry and physics, you still have more obligatory work in Norwegian and 2 other obligatory courses.

>Nor is anything else important.

Whoa there
User avatar #17 - rainbowrush (07/25/2015) [-]
It is true, though. In Norwegian you don't learn how to write properly and barely touch decent literature. Rhetoric is important but only get covered, somewhat, for one short hour.

In most language courses we don't learn to use use it. German for instance is all about grammar, learning words, pronounciation or getting comfortable with the language is not important. Maths is a joke and the people who choose to go for science don't get any time to actually study that. And this is only some of the problems in high school. Middle school is way worse. The worst part is that these faults mentioned is not the teachers fault, and they often speak against this bullshit, but get ignored.

In terms of infrastructure, most of the work is done by private contractors with a state employees supervising. You have to have the state supervisors or the contractor will do everything in their power to screw the state over. I was working on a road project with a DOT and the contractors kept changing the depth of their cut out of the road even though I called them out on in every half mile or so. Ended up over-running that portion of the budget $25k.
