My friend has someone pretty high on the list who he has never spoken too but he keeps her chat box open all the time so although it might not have anything to do with actually chatting, I'm sure it has something to do with chat.

It got hot due to magnetic induction. This is how induction ovens heat pots.

It's just dropping due to gravity. Molten metals lose their magnetic properties (so it's no longer suspended by the magnetic field and drops to earth).

Gauss was a scientist who did a bunch of shit with magnetics. One of the units we measure magnetics with is named after him.

A gauss cannon or railgun use powerful electromagnets to quickly accelerate a projectile (speeds up to mach 10 are quite possible). The military is developing these as we speak.

However, as the video shows, molten metal loses its magnetic properties... this couldn't be turned into a gun.

It's called a Railgun. <3

There is a weapon that functions similar to that. It fired a molten slag at supersonic speeds.
#51 - robotcomander (11/16/2012) [-]
i don't think it fired, i think it just dropped because it lost its magnatism

They already have, it's called a Railgun.

Hmm I thought weapons firing magnetically accelerated projectiles were called gauss weapons? But that just from playing Crysis so wtf do I know.
User avatar #66 - cometfire (11/16/2012) [-]
Depends on the design but the principal is basically the same. Using magnetics to fire the projectiles.
User avatar #40 - blackleather (11/16/2012) [-]
Not sure about Crysis cause I've never played, but most video games I've played that have magnetic weapons, it's usually called a Railgun.

But aside from that, I've seen documentaries about weapons that talk about railguns and they showed an actual railgun, although it was only experimental as nobody had actually perfected creating one at the time I saw it.

Then again, it's possible that we are both right and you are giving the name of the line of weapons where as I'm giving the name of a specific model or type of weapon that falls under the specification you named.

I've made a homemade railgun. You have to put a electromagnetic strip on each side of whatever you plan to fire. Build a capacitor bank ( charges up and holds their charges, best to charge it over 100kv, and capacitors are much like battery's except when they discharge, they do it in a fraction of a second. ) and send that current though it positive towards to back of the projectile and the negative towards the part of the gun where the projectile will leave. You get the gist of what I'm saying, But They are fun to build. Best to study up on them more, Because anyone could build one if he/she tried.
User avatar #296 - blackleather (11/19/2012) [-]
This is actually pretty interesting? How'd you manage to build it and what were your results? I'm curious.
User avatar #43 - thelordofrepost (11/16/2012) [-]
Well Gauss is named after a scientist, but the weapons I've seen called Gauss Rifles where actually coil guns in which a metal object is sped up by one coil (which is magnetic) turning on then as the object approaches it turns off and so on down the line. Rail guns however are to parallel metal bars that accelerate the object between them using one magnetic field, but I believe the navy has rail guns that create a small ball of plasma that they can accelerate far faster then a piece of metal and use the plasma to push the metal. Hope this helped!

gauss is when the magnets and material are a chain, that eventually acceleates one fine bead using many.

Rail guns are ones where one projectile is sped up with progressively stronger magnets
