Mythbusters tested that and its more or less impossible to shoot through a scope. Lenses are harder than you'd think.

I love the show, but you gotta admit they're not very thorough. They usually recreate the situation once or twice, sometimes more if it's something easy to pull off, but it's still always a small sample size. You don't get a 1 in a million shot on your second attempt.

You gotta keep in mind that it's not much of a science show, it's mostly meant to be entertaining.

Mythbusters is a very bad reference, they use very specific criteria with modern-era materials, and while most of the time they're pretty close, they aren't 100% exact.

They used a near modern scope for that myth. The North Vietnamese sniper scopes during that time period were complete garbage back consisting of a metal tube with three or two lenses that weren't even made of a hardened glass. Back then you could do that, but today with how modern scopes and lenses are made you can't kill doing that. Just severely injure them from a mixture of impact and possible lens shards as well as prevent them from sniping. Though today there are explosive sniper rounds designed to blow apart walls enemy units are taking cover behind though that is kind of overkill if you used one to shoot an enemy sniper in their rifle scope.
