Truth be told, they really arent. I'm assuming you're not from the US so its likely that all you see are the really publicized cases which do happen to involve police shootings. But in reality, the number of times cops are needed vs the number of times they actually shoot somebody is incredibly small. They are doing their jobs and that involves protecting not only themselves but also the civilians in the surrounding area.

Remember, most of the time when shit hits the fan, officers have maybe a second to decide if they are going to shoot or not. When a 300lb man is charging you (black or white it doesn't matter) you need to put him down fast. Both mace and tazers have been proven to not be 100% effective against some people, especially bigger guys. (See a case of a huge black guy in a bar taking two full cans of mace to the face and still fighting off 3 cops). If that huge guy gets to you and gets his hands on you with violent intent, there is little that a smaller cop can do to not only to prevent harm to himself but also prevent that CRIMINAL from taking his gun and doing god knows what. If that guy was charging at me, I can guarantee I would go to my firearm first every time. Regardless if he had a weapon or not.

As I mentioned below there is somehting called the "21 foot rule" in self defense. This states that on average, someone who is 21 feet away can run and get to you (either with a knife or get hands on you) before you can draw a firearm from a holster and get an accurate shot off. That is a far distance and its covered in not a lot of time. These officers are putting their life on the line and are forced to make those very hard decisions in an extremely small amounts of time under extreme duress. Honestly, I feel like most of the time lethal force is used, it is warranted. The media likes to spin it so the police always look like the bad guy, but that really isn't how it is.

He had his finger on the trigger, could have just as easily killed a cop had it been a real gun. These moments don't allow for drawn out critical thinking, he had a split second to decide when the gun was turned on him.

So yes, he made the right call with what he knew.
#49 - anon (08/25/2015) [-]
He didn't "have his finger on the trigger" the gun never even cleared his waistband. The caller with the complaint TOLD the dispatcher "it looks like a toy, it's probably a toy gun." There's audio of that statement. There's also video of the kid getting shot, BEFORE THE GUN CLEARS HIS WAISTBAND. So don't come at me with that "his finger was on the trigger it was the cops life or the kids" shit. Besides, police take an oath to protect and serve the community. They understand the risk involved when they take up the badge. So when you ask "It's his life or the criminals" you need to consider the possibility that the victim is a completely law abiding citizen. Cleveland is a state where open-carry is allowed. We, the people, are ALLOWED to have guns. The kid did NOT, at any point, POINT the gun at the officers. So, what law was he breaking, assuming the gun was real? Does the second amendment no longer exist? Police need to realize that NOT everyone is a criminal. We DON'T live in a police state. The term "innocent until proven guilty" exists for this sole fucking reason.

YOU try hitting the leg of a motherfucker running straight at you.
People who say shit like this are the ones who've never shot a gun. Can you say you have the reaction time of a fucking cheetah? If a dude is running at you with a knife from 5 meters (cause you're obviously a britfag) you have maybe 6 to 10 seconds before he's close enough to merc your ass.
User avatar #57 - emiyashirou (08/25/2015) [-]
5 meters is a distance that can easily be covered in under 2 seconds, unless you're a landwhale or a cripple.
User avatar #40 - lucariopwnz (08/25/2015) [-]
6-10 seconds? That's stretching it man, the 21 foot rule says that someone running at you with a knife can get to you and stab you (more times than not) before you can draw a firearm from a holster and get a decent shot off. That's 21 feet! Just under 7 meters, I agree with everything your saying, I just think that 6-10 seconds is way more time than you would actually have in said scenario

" I had two profiles before this one. The first was pappalardi (www.funnyjunk.com/user/pappalardi) named after not so famous bass-player Felix Pappalardi. I made it into the top 5 with that profile. I was permabanned for posting this picture: static.fjcdn.com/ajax/2ceb8bf78ae6ee75bf0f2d9eebb7c83d.jpg (yes, the censored version (though I had been banned a couple of times before.)) I then made a second profile, pappalordi (www.funnyjunk.com/user/pappalordi) which made it into the top 100 in two weeks before getting permabanned. The reason pappalordi was permabanned was that I posted the pic I was originally banned for on admin's profile along with a message, trying to appeal my innocence. Didn't go as planned."
