True, I imagine that it would also lead us into an era of 'nothing matters'. Why take care of your body when you can undo yesterday's mistakes without a care. I think there's some stories/movies about that already actually... Storing the conscious itself would be interesting, but along with being infinitely useful, it'd be infinitely dangerous. I can't see any way of removing the consciousness without removing the brain from the body. Then you get to to that point where you have to take the jump, do we try to transport the body, and risk the organs failing on the spot as they're basically ripped to shreds and reassembled even on the atomic level. Were you to cut a man in two, no matter how quickly, I imagine he would still die. I think the first few tests would have to be on a voluntary basis by people on death's row or the like. Even then it might be inconclusive.

With that in mind they could reconstruct the body in any way desired. For instance I'd imagine treating obesity or other diseases. Though the brain would be an interesting problem...

That would be the ultimate breakthrough in genetic manipulation. Imagine eradicating cancer while simultaneously increasing the intellect through manipulation of cerebral capacity. We could make ourselves associated perfect. Obviously retaining the consciousness would retain some of our own innate flaws, but you can't have your cake and eat it too, right?
