Barney Frank told them that. He told them to keep investing. Look up his interview with Bill O'reilly. I agree that this is a complex issue, but to call it a "free market" is just absurd, agreed?

While I agree with you fully on most of your post, It was bound to happen exactly this way whether Gamergate was created or not. Like you said, death and rape threats are every-day things on the internet. These had nothing to do with Gamergate originally, same thing with the ones Zoe Quinn recieved. If every single anonymous face behind the collective computer screen that is the internet knew better and ignored these women instead of our crazy few brothers attacking wildly we probably wouldn't be here.

But because, as you acknowledged, it's just how things are around here, there was no stopping it. It's exactly the same on their side, however, as several prominent figures closer to our side have received threats of all colors from the anti-ggs. Gamergate really IS a movement for ethical journalism, whether they want to admit it or not. We just have a vast quantity of nameless, faceless people (and the occasional troll) that choose to attack things more zealously. Once again, it's the same way on their side. As much distaste as I have for Sarkeesian, I'm sure she doesn't condone death threats toward our side. Or maybe she does, who knows.

Either way, both sides have its crazies now but the whole mess started with your average internet crazies blowing things out of the water, we're just responding to their enormous overreaction.
User avatar #91 - organiclead (10/31/2014) [-]
I agree with everything stated above, I just hate the idea of Sarkeesian being painted as some mastermind hiding behind the scenes and playing puppet master. She's just an attention whore who's using trending topics on Jezebel to get more page views.

I think Gamergate has points and deserves attention. I just wish the spark that set this off was something a little easier to defend like EA's habit of faking reviews or their habit of selling broken games instead of a post by someone's ex boyfriend.

Mirror's Edge 2. Anita sarkeesian is working on it.
User avatar #62 - organiclead (10/31/2014) [-]
I'm kind of surprised I can't find anything official about that considering how much of an attention whore Anita is. I found a Destructoid article on it and a few Steam topics, but nothing on her site or the Mirror's Edge 2 site.

The most relevant word in your post is "currently". Anita and her followers only REALLY started picking up speed recently. It's only been a couple months since the "gamers are dead" articles. It's an ongoing battle to keep things from becoming like that.

That's the problem with naysayers on this site. They're all too ready to jump up and say "Well look around you. Does it look like anything is like that now?!", and forget that a lot of us are fighting to prevent it from ever even happening. Anita has implied lots of times that she doesn't care that there are a lot of games that can appeal to women right now, she wants ALL games to appeal to women. And that's not so much a bad thing, except that to do it she wants to remove any form of depth or variety from female characters by making them all into shallow, badass main characters and nothing else.

Just watch her interview on the Colbert Report. He asks her "is it wrong that we want to save the damsel in distress every now and then?" and she answers "Why does she ever have to be a damsel? Why can't she save herself?" Because not all women are like that. Because we want variety.

Fair enough, I see your point, but I think sometimes people don't give enough credit to developers. I really don't think they'd give two shits about what the feminists have to say. Just look at Rockstar for example, they've been going against soccer mums and feminists ever since they started, yet they've changed nothing about their games, no matter how big the uproar was. My prediction is that in the future, if developers are being influenced by feminists AND it shows in their games, people just won't buy the games. Those developers will be done, and new developers will take their place. There will always be people like there are at Rockstar, who just want to make good games despite the glares of feminazis.
#100 - jackflak (10/31/2014) [-]
Yeah, I agree that it won't affect the huge names like Rockstar most likely. However, the problem that I believe exists is that this incident might make it impossible, or at least very intimidating, for a new dev to try to get started in the field. Ironically this means that the extremist feminists are trying to do to men exactly what they believe is happening in the industry to women. And I find that to be a shame :.
#101 - greatjobjimmy (11/01/2014) [-]
Well I hope that for everyone's sake, what you're saying doesn't happen. Thanks for the explanation
#102 - jackflak (11/01/2014) [-]
No problem. I know a lot of people see pro-GG posts and just roll their eyes about it. I guess a movement seems sillier when it's over the internet. I've never personally posted anything significant but I like to show my support when I can. If nothing else I know I can't stand the thought of people who directly make money off my hobby calling me and my friends losers and neckbeards just for enjoying said hobby. Personally I could give two shits less if a person I'm playing with happens to be a woman. I used to play WoW all the time and several of the best raiders I had the pleasure of playing with were women. All I care about is your personality. A shitty person is a shitty person regardless of gender.
User avatar #66 - organiclead (10/31/2014) [-]
Except she had no actual power behind anything before people started sending death threats and rape threats way back when she was campaigning. I know it's typical stuff on the internet, but most moms sitting around watching Fox News don't.

She's not a lawyer. She's not a developer. The only power she gets is because of her martyrdom and Gamergate has been fueling that like gasoline on a fire.

I tried getting a job at a pet store because its the only thing I have experience with.

They didn't hire me because I'm only 16 and have no license, despite running several home businesses myself in the past, such as breeding snakes and other animals, and making terrariums.

But no, lets hire the 19 year old that knows ******** about animals instead just because he can drive.

That's pretty screwed up. Sorry to hear the owners were dicks, though I guess it's really their loss. Any other pet stores in the area?

Looking over the information, I find it kind of funny that they seemed to keep pretty much everything in terms of lore from the old Final Fantasy MMO and just renamed a lot of the races. Though the actual leveling system looks completely new. Curse my lack of time to dedicate to a new MMO!
