But really, the Hunger Games series deals with uprising against a corrupt government. While I have not read BR or seen the entire thing, personally I think that BR may have a better battle... just the battle. I can't think of a better word for it. The part where the gladiatorial battle takes place. That may be better and cover more ground, allowing you to get to know all the characters to a good degree.
But HG is about one girl, and he struggle to get through the gladiatorial battle(which she does in like 1/2 the first book, so only 1/6th the story) then it's about how she will survive, how she puts on a facade to keep the gov. happy, then rebels with everyone and becomes the symbol of that rebellion.

They both have similar themes, but they're definitely different stories being told. HG is a story about one girl overcoming huge odds and inciting social change. BR is a tragedy covering survival in terrible odds at terrible costs. The battle was only "better" because it hurt more. It wasn't a bunch of well trained kids taking out a bunch of faceless goons, it was a bunch of scared kids trying to survive.
HR was much weaker and less impactful because Katniss never had to make any hard decisions in the first Games. She wasn't the one who killed Rue. She chose a different option than killing Peeta. She didn't even kill any kids from any of the non-comically homicidal distracts. I stopped reading at the first book because it was trying to tackle the same tough issues BR did but then pulled it's punches. It tried to present a merciless, terrible situation then gave us a deus ex machina to save her from getting too much blood on her hands.

Battle Royale was straight to the point, in that exact manner. Just because its "more human" and those single reactions, just one per contestant. It's straight forward unlike Hunger Games which had more complexity to why things were the way they were (why things in the games were being done). There was more background stories and various other arcs, I'm not going to go deep in it. The sequels to Battle Royale even just revolved one character killing people and revolting the government. They were similar themes, its just that Hunger Games had more to it. But whatever, I'm going to get thumbed down to oblivion for defending something that's in popular culture over the Japanese version.
