There's other ways to take care of a serious roach problem, but they're not much better. And how bad of a roach problem are you talking? Cause growing up in Houston, I'm quite used to roaches, but never anything like twelve per day.

Yeah, that's what my original comment was about really. Especially since icantbelieveitsnot never said anything like "if you don't want to spend money on anti freeze..." or something along those lines.

You usually don't see most of the roaches when you have a serious problem. I'm talking about the little bastards that like to nest in dishwashers and in cracks and only come out in the dead of night. You usually only see 1% of the numbers that are actually there in those cases and can't really reach them.

But roaches aren't fluffy!

Everybody knows humans always prefer being nice to other mammals, even if they're really assholes. But, I don't really use spray to kill roaches, I just kill them with a flyswatter.

I'm just not one for having an animal suffering needlessly. I'm fine with killing them, just not with them having a slow death. The fear and panic they go through with a slow death is something I don't want to bring on a creature for long. Just get it over with.
User avatar #65 - organiclead (08/13/2013) [-]
You've obviously never had a serious roach problem then. Those fuckers are hard to get rid of without sprays.

And yeah, suffering needlessly kind of sucks, but poison is expensive.

True, however you seem to be massively underestimating the ability to keep mums that the SAS have. There are a lot of secrets being kept by them for the sake of their government and the people at large and this would be no different. It is also not like they can't memory-erase anyone involved like Lockheart did. There are a lot of different ways to, within the logic of the universe, justify doming Voldemort with a 50-Cal.

Whllst the segrigation is an interesting aspect it really wasn't given the thorough think-through it needed thus relegating it to being a line in the sand that neither side can cross without any grand, meaningful explanation as to why that is. It is a plot point and a big one that shouldn't be left out. Just a passing line or a newspaper title or something to draw attention to the fact that either they tried this and it failed or there is something big standing in the way of them doing it.

I'm not saying they don't, what I'm saying is why is this never made clear that there is some kind of wizarding army. It gets to the point where Voldemort has himself a bonafide rebellion and not only do the wizards not roll out a mass of shock-troops at him but the muggles don't either.

It's not like this needs to be kept secret there's almost no attempt on Voldemort's part to keep this under wraps and I find it hard to imagine that the British government is so inconcievably impotent that they don't consider a joint muggle-wizard taskforce to fuck this mother up.
User avatar #67 - organiclead (08/08/2013) [-]
I'm not very fond of "secret world" stories for that reason, but in the Harry Potter universe there is a big emphasis on trying to keep the two worlds separate. Possible because wizards would have a ball enslaving all the muggles, possibly because it would lead to a huge civil war due to the power differences involved, possible because wizards are actually afraid of the muggle world but refuse to outright admit it. This is a pretty key element in the worldbuilding. There are a lot of resources put into keeping the common population from knowing about the wizarding world, more than were being put into trying to prevent another Voldemort from rising. This implies this secret is one that's more important to keep than keeping Hogwarts from falling.

And I could have sworn they kept dementors around to be their army and prison wardens but the dementors turned on them. I can't remember for sure, it's been a long time since I read the books.

I disagree. The whole alienation from the Muggle world thing is pretty fucking stupid when you think about it. Are you honestly telling me that an entire generation of 21st century teenagers simply have no want of a phone, let alone a computer or a television? Guns are a pretty simple concept anyway.

What I was getting at though is an SAS sniper would get that job done pretty damn well without letting national secrets out because that's pretty much what the SAS do. If not him then why weren't wizards employed as troops in Afghanistan or Iraq? Seriously, a covert team of wizarding shock-troops seems like a pretty effective means of warfare, especially if you're killing all the enemies that may end up as witnesses.

Plus, who would believe a witness saying that they were attacked by British Troops using magical powers. Nobody.
#92 - sas (08/11/2013) [-]
yes
User avatar #44 - organiclead (08/08/2013) [-]
The first Harry Potter book ended around 1990, back when only doctors and CEOs carried the bricks known as cellphones and laptops. The next generation might have that problem with muggle born, but the wizarding world itself tends to divorce itself from any technology quickly. That's part of the appeal of the series.

Also, who says wizards aren't employed to fight wizards in Afghanistan or Iraq? People don't see that stuff because canonly most muggles who see a wizard with a wand see a man with a gun.
User avatar #57 - snowshark (08/08/2013) [-]

I tried getting a job at a pet store because its the only thing I have experience with.

They didn't hire me because I'm only 16 and have no license, despite running several home businesses myself in the past, such as breeding snakes and other animals, and making terrariums.

But no, lets hire the 19 year old that knows ******** about animals instead just because he can drive.

Looking over the information, I find it kind of funny that they seemed to keep pretty much everything in terms of lore from the old Final Fantasy MMO and just renamed a lot of the races. Though the actual leveling system looks completely new. Curse my lack of time to dedicate to a new MMO!
