I'm also very rusty so I'm not sure how long it would take to refamiliarize myself with the game, especially since I don't know jack about 5th Edition.

I can see that. 5th edition isn't all that much different than 4th, but it can get complicated with Spells especially.

Well the local game shop I go to has Wednesday night D&D so I can meet with Randoms easily (though it has a small buy-in), it's just I'm not sure I really want to join up with some randoms for the game.

Randoms can be very fun to play with. You just need to remember that if you don't like a particular player that it's the player's fault and not the game.

For example, I'm the middle of a campaign where I could have killed another player's character because he basically attacked me FOR NO REASON and he whined about quitting the game if this character died. I had to use Player knowledge just to end it but it kind of pisses me off. But I'm pissed off at him because he's a terrible player, not because the game isn't fun.

I played D&D in Middle School to early high school with a group of friends. We ended up going to different schools and fell out of contact. Mind you I was only really friends with one member of the group, but still those days were fun. The DM (my friend) was very committed to making good campaigns.

That's unfortunate to hear. Maybe you can start up a new DnD group through Roll20.com ?
