A history professor? that's brilliant, really that is. I love history. I myself want to work for the Government, perhaps from the military to the state department or even the CIA (ridiculous sounding, but....)

I'm not suggesting Communism, least not economically. I believe that to smooth Socialism onto the populace, people must adopt more Confucian ideals of community welfare and such. And I cannot stress this enough, I do NOT want to eliminate incentive to work. Yes there will be less room say to become a Multi-millionaire Tycoon, but you will be able to be firmly wealthy. Taxes will not be so heavy that they nullify any concept of wealth and poverty, it will simply narrow the gap between the two.

Wellfare of all, not individual wellfare... WE are individuals, we are not robots. I understand where you are coming at (I think) but I dont think it should be as extreme. I hope this helps you understand: I hope to be a history prof, make 150,200 grandish a year (ultimately). I will be upper middle class (not rich by any means but deffinelty well off). Once all of my student loans are paid off I will donate a SIGNIFICANT amount of money and volunteer time to help the poor. THAT is how I would help the wellfare of all. I am an American and I support the American dream. If I am a factory worker (WHICH I AM NOT) what would motivate me more? The thought that if I wake up, work hard and do well I can make it RICH (ala carnegie, Rockefeller) or the thought that If I wake up, work hard and do well I can continue to be meh in a meh apartment with barely adequate food and no leisure time... Easy choice there!!!! And do you know WHY Greeze spent more than 3x their GDP? because to provide all the expensive crap a socialist (essentially communist from what your describing) government requires it COSTS 3X a GDP and it would be IMPOSSIBLE to spend wisely. The only way to have a proper budget is to only provide research money, infrastructure (that includes firefighters and police along with roads, bridges, etc) and defense/international relations. THATS IT! Limit government and leave the rest up to private industry. And material values? material things are what the economy is based on! you dont make em, you dont use em, YOU DONT HAVE AGOOD ECONOMY!!!!

and of course im interested in politics, what do you think my minor (potential 2nd major) is :P

Haha, I am an American, actually. half Japanese, but still american.

As for what you were saying about public schools, it is true that they are sometimes run questionably, but even so they provide the building blocks for all youth, poor or wealthy. Those who can afford it by all means have the right to give their child a private school education. My aim is to not bring the rich down (though to a tiny degree that will happen) but rather raise the poor out of the squalor that so many live in.

good! READ THE FEDERALIST PAPERS! It will open your eyes to what the Founders intended. And there will always be poor people (quote from Jesus). Best we can do is make their lives better. The only way to do that would to force the rich to pay for them, which would have a domino effect, making everyone want to just be poor because, human nature again, hey, I wont have to work HARD since old rich guy will just pay for me! People are poor for a reason. Very VERY few people have no choice in regards to their poorness. and in america, Very VERY few people are truly poor. I dont know ANYONE that doesnt at least have access to a soup kitchen. Thats at LEAST one hot meal a day that doesnt cost a PENNY of taxpayer money (the one in my hometown is run by a church). While that isnt ideal, it is survivable, exspecially since it is all you can eat and they can take all the day old bread (not moldy nasty bread just bread bakers cant sell. Its still fine) they want. Add onto that the countless homeless shelters and the only reason people starve is pride or ignorance. In America we all have equal opprotunitites. Anyone who says they cant go to college is an IDIOT! I go to a prestigious private University. The standard cost (tuition, room, board fees etc) is 45k ish a year. I pay 10!!!!! which equals 40K for 4 years. there are NUMEROUS loans that as long as you are a full time student you DONT HAVE TO PAY! then, once you stop (and this would include grad school) you have SIX MONTHS before you owe any money! ANYONE CAN DO THAT!!!!!! AMURICA! Please Please PLEASE personal message me anything I havent responded to. I really want to continue this discussion because its nice to have someone who actually respects my views instead of saying no your wrong newfag. Plus I enjoy spreading the knowledge of the joys of Capitalism (no I am not a Romney fan I am a reluctant Romney supporter because he is the least bad candidate... FML)

I'm not suggesting Communism, which is indeed to good to be true, but rather a significant safety net, and a cut back on the gap between Wealthy vs. Poor. Government in this country is very tedious in decision making, because it is controlled by TWO dominant parties. I believe if there was one major party, and a bunch of smaller parties, things would move a lot more quickly, and if majority of people don't like one particular policy the dominant (in this case Socialist Party) then they can simply vote for a smaller party.

As for the expenses you were referring to, I am not saying healthcare should cover everything. I believe that healthcare should be distributed according to Occupation of the recipient, and their income. The richer you are, the less you will receive qualify for (although you will still be covered for basic medical checkups), as there will be a sustained privatized medicaid industry existing as well.

and this is how I see things: Many people offer the rebuttal that through this system everyone will be poor, and that is not true, that's not what I want. Think of it like this:

On a scale of 1-10 in wealth:

Working class: 2-3
Middle Class: 5-6
Wealthy: 7-10

I want to see:

Working class: 3-4.5
Middle Class: 5-6
Wealthy: 7-8

Yes there is less room to climb, but then there is also far less you can fall. And people will still be motivated because there will still be incentives, taxes won't take all of their income, and they will have options to spend their money. I don't believe the rich should be punished for being rich, but they should help out their fellow man. I don't believe mankind as a whole can advance unless this becomes the popular philosophical doctrine, endorsed and exemplified by te government.

and the older ones in DW have a completely different feel from now. But they're good in their own right.

...universities get the best grants, the best scholarship, the best reputation etc. also, public schools are run in the WORST way possible and I feel private companies running high schools would get the most out of the money. Again, why else would parents spend so much on private schools? Because they are the best) ((I appologize for the jumping around, i have adhd and my thoughts wander). Closing the gap between the wealthy and middle class... WHY?!?!?!?! There will be rich people, its the American dream! Whats beautiful about capitalism is you can be rich!!!!! Again, the job that required you to go to college for 4 years then grad school for 2-3 and then spend 4-5 years writing a dissertation OUGHT to pay more than someone who simply graduates high school and goes into a mill!!!! THEY WORKED HARDER!!!! also it requires a smarter individual, not everyone can go to college, some simply arent smart enough! Your idea of forcing people to work, while I respect you more for not wanting to support parasites (like the bastards leeching off wellfare) It does go against liberty and the persuit of happiness, 2 of the 3 things American Government is based on (although I have a sneaking susspicion you are not... If you are brittish I will have to look more into modern brittish political theory. I am only familiar with the Mangna Carta, Locke and a little bit of Hobbes, the likes of which the american system is based on. I would also encourage you to look into the Federalist papers, they are available free of charge on the internet and I would be happy to let you know the big ones to read) so thats a nono (FREEDOM!!!) The minimum wage is already to high, controlled, monitored capitalism destroys competition which is what makes prices lower and products better, although I do understand the thought that it would promote economic growth. And leisure time is a neccessity. Without it, we would go insane. Even the president goes on vacation (cont)
